Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2000 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Coeur de Cuvée France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
Nose was quite closed but luckily still approachable. I found this quite rich and showy for a young champagne. Kind of a halfway house between the orthodox mainstream and the radical small growers. Good potential

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
1993 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Medium golden color. Had that butter popcorn/nutty nose. Fat and brawny but with decent acidity and minerality to balance. A very solid effort but not on par with 92 or 96. Drinking well now but can hold.
White
1995 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
From Leflaive's UK importer and this was in great shape with no premox issues. Still very youthful in appearance and mouthfeel. Needed a good 30-45mins of air to get going and continued to open up and gain weight over 2 hours. Not especially big and powerful but classic balance and elegance. You have to admire the consistency of leflaive

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
1982 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
89 points
Color was very advanced. This bottle had a great nose but the palate was a bit thin and tired. It retained that classic tea and rose petal signature. glad i popped the cork on this one rather than waiting any longer as it was clearly in decline. may not have been a representative bottle
Red
1990 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Primary and drinking but nowhere near it's peak. On hind sight this was not a good pairing with the giacosa which tasted so much older. Will hold and improve. I like the voerzio style which is in between classic and modern

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
1993 Domaine A.-F. Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
93 points
I probably liked this more than the rest of the group. Great nose. Lovely vosne spice with a bit of sous bois. A big wine with good length but perhaps a little disjointed on the palate tonight. Still a lovely drink.
Red
1993 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
95 points
Consensus was that this was drinking the best among the red 3 burgs tonight. just very classic and well structured. everything was in the right place. gorgeous and a 93 drinking at peak
Red
1991 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
91 points
A very generous offering from DW. Incredibly young due to it being x-domain. the color was bringht red with no signs of rust unlike the two 93s. this wine kept changing during the course evening (classic chambolle elegance, new world pinot, even hints of old barbaresco) it was like a model at a fashion show. Really hard to pin down. Not as open as the 93s but i think certainly a few points of upside. Who says burgundy can't age?

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
1989 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
88 points
Didn't plan on opening any clarets for the evening but a generous offering from David. I thought this bottle was a good transition between the burgs and the rhones but i guess somehow got a bit lost between 2 great flights. It had class but I've had better off vintage 1st growths. this could be a hit with mainstream audience on a given night but it would take a special bottle of claret to please this crowd tonight

Flight 6 (3 notes)

Red
1988 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
97 points
2nd time winecowboy opened this for me and it was brilliant again. this was singing from the first pour without any decanting. liquored cherries, flowers, herbs, meat, tea, tobacco, earth - its all here. classic bonneau grenache purity but without being overly farmey. this bottle was at a great place tonight and was WOTN for me and for many of the others. if the 88's this good i need to try the 89 and 90!
Red
1980 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
I think we should have decanted this for at least 30-45mins. This bottle was very meaty and funky. Kept opening up in the glass but sadly i finished before it really started to sing. outshone by the celestins 88 tonight.
Red
1973 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
2nd time lordrayas popped this one for me and it was definitely better 4 years ago. Kirsh and barnyard funk. A bit over the hill. Had seen better days but still quite impressive considering the vintage
