Quilceda Creek Comparison - '03-'08

At the Homestead....

Tasted November 19, 2011 - November 25, 2011 by Matt Scott with 617 views

Introduction

My objective was to really compare the wines is a short distant time-frame and see how they are doing. Needed to make room as well.

I have always really loved these wines. The first time I had it was the '98 vintage only seven years ago and have been an admirer ever since. With the proper coaxing and patience, the wines can be very enjoyable at a young age.

Flight 1 - Over my birthday week (6 notes)

Red
2003 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington
96 points
Decanted for two hours. Deep and rich looking violet, with a ruby rim. Plum, toasty oak, violets, red dirt, gravel and ripe cherry. Rich and layered, the velvety tannins are still quite present and the right level of freshness. Wonderful finish and a sweet aftertaste. How could you not love this wine. Pretty much ready. Glad I have one more left. Drink 2012 - 2025.

Wow! Even better than I remember, with me last consuming this four years ago. In fact, this is even better than the '03. Flowing cascades of fruit and spicy elements. Violet and a very thin rim that is sanguine. Long, long, long and I did not see the propitiousness within (giving her 94 pts at that time). Spicy tobacco, blackberry, fudge, leather, cinnamon and flower shop. Velvet and apparent tannins; a glowing nexus of flavor. A long life ahead for this ravishing beauty. Drink 2013 - 2032.

See previous notes. My favorite Quilceda yet. A little tighter than last time - which was over a year ago - and still exalting. Even though she is not giving too much at all, there is the utmost enjoyment in the drinking of such an elegant, illustrious wine. So long, refined, intellectual and for a long-running study. I can't imagine a better Cabernet from Washington. A little less open than last time, however, this is truly an onion wine. I love a paradox and this is extremities in balance.... So much so, that the finish truly sails into the sunset. As Lennon said: "I'm crying..." Drink 2016 -.

Decanted for three hours. Inky violet and garnet. Sweet tobacco, blackberry, dried red fruit, nut meg and plums. More concentrated than the '07 and even more approachable. There's a long, tight finish that exhibits a lot of polished tannins, then fruit as well. Not ultra-feminine, but still shows some class. Pure chiffon and gleaming on all fronts. Drink 2013 - 2028.
