Introduction

Brian, Karen, Tim, Nancy, Brett and Carol came over for an improptu tasting. Normally we taste everything blind but we kept it pretty informal this time. Food included an excellent mushroom and sausage risotto, blue cheese and asparagus wrapped with grilled tenderloin, an antipasta with assorted cheeses, olives, roasted eggplant and red peppers, and grilled asparagus. Also a mushroom pate. We started with a Champagne, Vermentino and Arneis which I didn't take notes on but thoroughly enjoyed. My notes on the wines were brief but the wines were all enjoyable.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
2007 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Peay Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Big and beautiful pinot nose. Vanilla, sassafras, mushroom. Cherries and vanilla. Rich, soft, some spice and oak. Loved it.
Red
2007 Aston Pinot Noir Clone 115/667 USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
More restrained aromatically than the Williams Selyem Peay but it has a heavier mouthfeel and is richer. This also has more acidity. Bigger on the palate than the nose suggests. Some spice and red fruits. Nice.
Red
1993 Livingston Moffett Cabernet Sauvignon Moffet Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Herb, coffee and faint bell pepper on the nose. If I tasted this blind, I would have guessed old world cabernet. Great acidity, slightly tart in comparison the the Penfolds Grange, very dry. Some fine tannins despite being almost 20 years old. I wouldn't have guessed the wine to be that old. Nice wine.
Red
2003 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Slightly earthy nose. Cherries, faint tar and earth. Fine tannins. Great acidity. Very nice.
Red
2003 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Slightly dusty nose. Darker and richer fruits than the Siro Pacenti. As the wine opened the fruit became just a little raisiny. Slight honey. Dry. Nice.
Red
1997 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia
Aromatics of ripe black fruits, licorice, menthol, eucyliptus. Smells so good. Great acidity. Dark fruits, menthol, dry. Beautiful and classy.
Red
2004 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Wow. I love this wine. Everytime I've had it it stands out among some great wines. Some blood and mineral notes, honey, black pepper, ripe fruit. Very fresh and dry. Fairly masculine. Excellent.
