Introduction

An awesome insight into rousseau's magic vineyards side by side.

Flight 1 - Rousseau all the way! (10 notes)

Outstanding bracket of heaven scented brilliance

Silk like, fleshier than the lavaux, very classy.

A more taught tight example perhaps a bit leaner than the cazetiers certainly more structured. Pretty good though.

Absolutely loved this. Shows sweeter fruits than the gevrey wines and is really appealing now. Lovely depth to the fruit, complex, shows pedigree well.

Comments of Brett around the room. I didn't find the Brett a worry but if you like clean wines then drink something from the new world. Loads of character, funky, burnt rubber immense concentration and good length. Maybe not the best ruchottes ever but certainly still grand cru and with a long way to go. Wonder if the Brett will be apparent when all the other material emerges over the next decade? Interesting debate.

Pretty closed still has great silky profile, fine tannin, classic Rousseau.

This was everything you could hope for from a designated premier cru and more. Kaleidescopic nose, ethereal and light all at once. Such great tannin, so fine yet omnipresent. Very succulent, most complex nose behind the close de beze at this stage. Years to go yet but this was a classic. Flat out fantastic.

Charming as the name suggests but the least complex of all the grand crus today.

If I were to choose only one wine to taste for the rest of my life it would be a Rousseau. If I had to pick one from the stable it would be close de beze. So often the pick over the chambertin for me albeit there's never much in it. Shows an opulence and rarely the sauvage character that the straight chambertin often does. Is it the earlier picking (clos de beze is always picked later) which gives rise to this wilder element or simply the vineyard which contributes to this? Is it like la tache and romanee conti with the former producing the better wine in some years despite the others exalted status. The nose on this wine is incredible. Other worldly, defies description, orgasmic! Massive complexity, layers of flavour, no where near ready to drink yet but still fantastic today. Much more approachable than the chambertin which is still closed in.

Great wine. Very backward austere, shows a little sauvage, sous bois element. Not singing like the beze but a pretty awesome wine all the same. Needs time and hard to judge at this stage definitely not the stunner that the previously mentioned wine is today.

A Ripping wine from a very difficult vintage. Looks better more complete than the beze does from the same vintage. Shows less of the greenies also. Not the most profound but incredibly rewarding drink for a comparative bargain. Gives a great insight into the incredible expression of the better years at less than half the price. At $250 well worth it!

Closing

A pretty difficult year but you don't see any sign in rousseau's hands. On the whole pretty impressive but all need time still. Close de beze the standout at this stage. All wines possess trademark fine bone china tannin profile and I think these will be great value with a bit of age if you dig elegance and understatement.
