Flight 1 (13 notes)

Quite a big flight, but wonderfully directed by Jeff Eastman. Standouts were the Leroy 04 Nuits St Geoges (obviously), as well as the Leroy 07 Bourogne Rouge, two Girardin wines, both the 09 Pommard Vignots and Chambolle Musigny VV.

Again, a substantial whiff of sulfur off the nose, but with in minutes in the glass this has all blown over. Thoughts of starfruit or other Eastern fruits...white, yellow and green. Really clean on the palate with no noticeable oak. Truly? this much sulfur can't be altering the flavor, cleaning it up perhaps, neutralizing. I really wonder what the Total Sulfur is for this bottling. There have to be components to the wine (AKA body, ABV, intensity of fruit aroma, etc) that alters my perception of ppm of Free or Total Sulfur of this wine.
But again, that aroma disappears after a couple minutes in glass, so the conversation in my head continues, but the wine leaves me with much mineral, 'the Perm,' and a very taut nature on the palate. Must explore more.

2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
A soft whisper of an oaky cream. The acid makes this go KAPOW!! on the palate. Moderate fruit express on a very present palate with a smoke and soft spice.

2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
In General, Girardin is going Bio-dynamic with their vineyards. They had Premature Oxidation problems in the 90s, but are since back to solid performance.
Less oak here than the previous wine, Girardin Chassagne 09 VV Blanc, which already was pretty tame on the oak expression. Clean and linear, with a presence of acid as a spark in the aroma. Soft vanilla, medium plus finish and lingering cream.

2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Maranges 1er Cru
Light and clean strawberry and stem. Not to make Cru Beaujolais allusions, but...Maranges is pretty close. I guess this is my first red of the day as well. Same thoughts as with the Bouchard 09 Rouge (basic), from earlier this week on DAY1. Palate gives a soft hand of fruit upfront and then finishes off more serious-like and not as light as the nose would suggest.

2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Bourgogne Emotion de Terroirs France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Nose shows quite firm, with an oak laser that emphasizes elements of the grape tannin. A dark red cherry fruit aspect, and kick of sweet fruit that goes quickly, working along side some rhubarb flavors as well. Good value at $23 from Burgundy.
Red
2009 Domaine Thomas Morey Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
More of a waxy polish to the fruit aromas, but actually a substantial wood expressed in nose. A couple chords of wood on the palate too. Wow. Loads of oak all over this and at $20 it makes me wonder what's supposed to be going on here. First vintage of this wine perhaps for T. Morey...?
Red
2007 Maison Leroy Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Ah...a beauty of red fruits in the nose, orange zest and great cinnamon spice. Possibly the best experience of this wine to date. Some green spice for legs in the cellar. Sage and spices of chicken stock. Buy.
Red
2009 Domaine Matrot Monthélie France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Monthélie
Tight and pitched red fruit. Stem thoughts and lots of stem spice on an easy body.
Red
2008 J.M. Boillot Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Quiet aromas, but some really tight wood and fruit arise. A laser that misses my nose but hits me in the brain somewhere. Quite serious thoughts on the palate, but tight and this really just seems to need some more time to open up.
Red
2009 Domaine Matrot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Quiet spice and tight aromas again, but the palate really opens up in to a red fruit salad. Although a bit blunted by a soft dark oak note.

2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Pommard Les Vignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
The first wine of the day with some Brett presence, albeit very harmonious. Thoughts of this being the biggest wine in the set thus far.
Red
2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
With out the earth of the previous Girardin 09 Pommard Vignots. Along with the 2007 Leroy Bourgogne Rouge, this is the balls for aroma. Almost fruit forward for Burgundy. Great and it has thoughts of completeness.
Red
2004 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Peach. Candied orange. Autumnal leafy, both orange and brown. Beautiful, big and round caress on the palate with some soft brown sugar and resolving green spice. Mmmm.

Flight 2 - Kermit Lynch (3 notes)

Both of the Roulot reds really stood out for outstanding fresh and present texture. Not to mention the 09 Bougogne Blanc, great value at $40. The white Cherisey of the same source was of such breed, again great value at $70.

Red
2009 Domaine Roulot Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Red fruit aromas. cherry kool-aid. all about the super sexy texture and quiet on the green front too.
Red
2009 Domaine Roulot Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru
more firmness in the nose than the basic 09 Bourgogne Rouge from Roulot. tighter aromas, but the palate is much more giving with fruit. some mild oak, that gives focus rather than breadth. Easy ash, and again, all about the texture and really giving on the palate.
Red
2009 Domaine Martelet de Cherisey Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Blagny 1er Cru
Loaded with spice. cinnamon, clove, 'candied fruit', thoughts of delicious amari. wow.

Flight 3 - Bouchard Pere et Fils (5 notes)

Continuing to get better vintage upon vintage. Not a slouch in the bunch here, but really digging on the Beaune du Chateau Blanc.

White
2009 Bouchard Père et Fils Pouilly-Fuissé France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
super mineral and clean. seashells.
White
2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Beaune du Château Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Wow, this really gives. Feels like a 5% new oak appeal on the nose and then more of a neutral tear on the palate.
Red
2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Beaune du Château France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Cherry and stem harmony on the nose and palate. 17 different parcels, 1er Cru, all vintified separately.
Red
2009 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Fruit with soft barrel spice. A wax to the fruit and a nice jump up in complexity. Moderate fruit ripeness to the palate. Monopole, 3 acres.
Red
2009 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
First of the Bouchard reds to let on to much if any new oak appearance on the palate. Really stacked palate with density of fruit.
