Introduction
Annual event with family and friends. The Peter Michael Chardonnay and the Poetry were my WOTN. For the rest of the crew, favorites included the Breggo Pinot and the Opus.
Flight 1 (14 notes)
White
2009 Peter Michael Chardonnay Cuvée Indigene
huge, golden, white flowers, clove, all in a beautiful balanced package. This seems like it will last for decades ****+
White
2009 Becker Vineyards Viognier
To me, the Becker viognier is the best wine in Texas, and one of the best examples of viogniers in the states. That said, this wine still has that full mouth feel typical of viognier, but just starting to lose some of its initial freshness and appeal, and starting to show a bit of heat. Still, nearly ****
Red
2009 Breggo Cellars Pinot Noir
juicy strawberry, cola flavors, medium scarlet colored. A real favorite of the crowd and the first bottle to be emptied. ****
Red
2008 Charles Smith Cabernet Sauvignon Chateau Smith
tasting like it's starting to get a bit old, vs. poor storage, but with some airing started to freshen up. Judgement reserved.
Red
2008 Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry
deep dark purple, full of dark fruits, graphite, with beauitful balance. A big yet very elegant Napa Cab. Outstanding ****+
Red
2006 Opus One
A very good, but not great Opus. Medium weight, a bit over oaked perhaps, but nice wine ****
Red
2008 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Very typical caymus Napa. deep colored, big upfront chocolatey, kirsch, vanillin flavors. This wine was fairly low down on everyone's list tonight and the last to go. ****
Red
2008 Larkmead Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
simply a lovely, full balanced napa cab. sweet tannins allow for current drinking, or for the long haul. Better than ****
Red
2007 Shafer Relentless
big full, very easy to drink Napa Syrah. No heat, just full peppery dark fruits. ****
Red
2006 Rubicon Estate Rubicon
Dark cherry, leathery flavors, with some dusty tannins. Perhaps more time will help this open up a bit more. ****
Red
2005 Concha y Toro Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
tasting a bit old, a tad cloying with some syrupy fruit, raisiny off flavors **
Red - Fortified
Red - Fortified
N.V. Taylor Wine Company Port
light ruby chestnut colored, sweet with cherry flavors, but quite good for what it is. ***
