Flight 1 (1 note)

Red
2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
96 points
Decanted 4 hours. Telltale Nebbiolo ruby-rust color, transparent, semi-murky, orange hues. One of the best noses of any wine I've had, balancing power and subtlety, almost haunting in its depth; red cherry and berry, creamy vanilla, wildflowers, leather, and seemingly an array of various mountain herbs and underbrush in the background. Very precise and layered in its complexity. Palate has pure ripe cherry fruit with a tartness giving the fruit beautiful freshness. Behind the fruit is a savory streak of game/rawhide; tarry, faintly smokey, subtle minerality following to the finish. 96+

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
2000 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Cork had some seepage; soft cork managed to be removed OK with what seemed like a good seal. Decanted 4 hours. Nose of red licorice, caramel, campfire, fresh herbs, but dominated by very fragrant white pepper on mid nose. Continued to open with air, adding more prune-raisin, gamy tones, and even sugary vanilla cake batter. Very tight palate despite the decant; leathery, tart red pomegranate and cassis fruit, soaked nutty wood edges; late palate has very strong astringent tannins. Improved considerably during the night. Young; acts like it needs another 10 years to really come around.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2001 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
95 points
Be careful on fill levels--this bottle was at mid neck, but others from the same lot were base of neck or top of shoulder. Decanted 4 hours. Nose has very ripe dark red fruit, red cassis, spearmint (expression of "silver polish"), roasted herbs, nutty wood, cinnamon, and white chocolate. Palate picks up these elements and adds rawhide, blueberry fruit, dark ultra-ripe plum. Still showing fairly aggressive tannins, giving it a youthful bitter backbone, but even this can't faze the massive fruit of this wine. Kept improving. Drinks very well now but could go another decade.

Flight 4 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Opened and tasted 4 days prior, recorked, and kept cool, allowing it to unwind a bit in the meantime. Obviously concentrated, the nose is still tight; blood orange, wax, chalk, and sweet white flowers. Palate has bright tangerine, mint; again, very tight, almost delicate in its honeyed citrus feel, with lovely white chalky mineral texture carrying along with the fruit. An excellent but exceptionally young wine.
