Flight 1 - Champagne Starter (1 note)

With cheese sables

White - Sparkling
2008 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Inflorescence Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine France, Champagne

Pale color, very light, fine bubbles. Quite ripe and giving for a zero dosage. Lemon, apple, apricot, slight yeasty elements, some minerals. Very nice balance but not searingly acidic like some grower bubbly. Filled out a bit with air. Delicious.

Flight 2 - A White (1 note)

With salad of goats cheese and red pepper with balsamic dressing

Suffered slightly from being served a bit too warm, but still quite good. Pear, citrus, minerals, a touch of honey, distinctive chenin texture. Just enough RS to give it a rounder feel and balance the acid.

With roast partridge, roast potatoes and kale

Suffered a bit from being poured with the two 1ers. Fantastic pure gevrey nose of dark cherries and iron, but the palate is a bit simple and slightly hollow in the midpalate. Quite a bit of tannin and it needs some time to resolve and fil out. Good wine but outclassed tonight.

A really nice burg that held its own against the CSJ. Dark cherry, wet fur and iron in a midweight, elegant package. Accessible but showing quite a bit of structure and will surely improve. Lovely pairing with the roast partridge.

Plenty of red and black cherries and noticeable but not overwhelming oak that presents as a mixture of pine needles and baking spice, and maybe just a hint of green. Where this really shows its class is in its texture: the fruit on the palate comes in layers that give it density but it's long and silky and perfectly balanced. Starting to show just a touch of development with slight savory characteristics. Excellent.

Flight 4 - Two Borgogno Baroli (2 notes)

With osso bucco

Same bottle as cooberp, original release, not library. Brilliant redbrick color. Awesome nose with stunning complexity: I noted scorched earth, tar, barbeque sauce, roses, brown sugar, baking spices, with hints of red cherries in the background. The palate is still alive with lovely vibrant acidity, although there's not a whole lot of fruit lefts. Improves in the glass for 20 minutes with the fruit coming out more, but peaks quickly. By the end a bit of tannin shows up and it starts to dry out a bit. Maybe not the best wine of the night, but certainly the most interesting.

Meh. Very dark color. Black cherry, plenty of tannin, showing the alcohol a bit. Slightly anonymous and lacking in interest or typicity. Not bad but not particularly good either.

Fantastic. Peaches, melon, citrus, slight tropical hints, but there's also a slight herbal character that adds complexity. The palate is dense and mouthcoating with enough acidity to keep it from being flabby or cloying -- especially impressive in light of the vintage.

Extreme. This is verging on BA territory. Lots of rich tropical fruit, significant botritys. In the mouth it's rich and cloyingly sweet, with not nearly enough acid to balance the sugar. I didn't want more than a couple sips of this.
