Introduction

A great idea by Bordeaux Index to organise a joint producer dinner and something we rarely see.

Poggio Scalette : Although eclipsed by the more flamboyant Luca Sanjust, Jurij Fiore deserves a lot of accolades. Soft spoken , humble yet full of passion and pride for his wines. And indeed for us, traditionally not Sangiovese lovers, his wines were the eye opening moment of the night and we would look for them in the future.

Petrolo: Luca Sanjust is a character to be around with an infectious energy and is so much fun. Open and proud of his achievements with the galatrona he spoke of how he learned his craft and followes a pomerol approach to wine. In general we find his wines too oaky and with extracted with little vintage variation. Maybe after trying the 1999 , and a similar question we often ask ourselves with california wines, we are just trying them too young for our left bank Bordeaux palate. Let's see.

Flight 1 - Apperitivo (1 note)

Jurij Fiore's personal gamble and a tiny production of 1000 bottles a year originally for private consumption and now almost exclusively sold to a Tuscan restaurant.
Designed to be Burgundian in style. Light oak fruity and floral. Starts sharp and focussed but finishes with long and creamy. Quite liked it. 89-90

Flight 2 - Starters (2 notes)

Young yet relatively forward, alive, fresh and with good acidity. Some sharp edges but a good drink more designed for early consumption. 88-89

Very young and this Bordeaux blend needs a good 3-5 yrs to get to drinking age. Lots of red fruit at this stage. Alive tannins still need time. Light on the wood which actually helps. At the moment 88 but could well be much better in the future

Flight 3 - The Il Carbonaiones (3 notes)

Red
2009 Podere Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve IGT Italy, Tuscany, Alta Valle della Greve IGT
Relatively fruit forward even at this young age. Smoother than expected but still with some sharp spikes of youth at the end. Fresh , with good acidity and length. Requires some patience but , should drink well in a couple of years and judging by the 99 &96 we tried post this it has the legs to age for a good 15 yrs easily.

From magnum.colour shows its age and was a bit cloudy ( although we think this is due to bad handling of the bottles by the restaurant ) Well aged wine but still alive and vibrant. Good palate presence, good red fruit notes and light oaky (?) feel to it. Still some life into it too but not a bad time to drink it. 92/93 but be aware of bottle quality

Wow. Still so much life into this wine and a testament to what an be done with good handling of Sangiovese. The fruit is still singing , has aged gracefully and has a good long finish. Really impressed by it and will make us look for Poggio Scalette wines. 93

Flight 4 - The Galatronas (3 notes)

Young but supple with lots of fruit and power. Signature galatrona extraction and density very modern with good amount of oak. As with all galatrona's they can be enjoyed young, especially if one like the modern twist to it, but( judging by the 1999 we tried along) this wine needs 10-15yrs and it will age into to a beauty. 91-92 but with a great future.

Very elegant nose, restrained and balanced. It's a galatrona so the oak and density are here, modern yet very Tuscan. Lush fruit fills the palate and has the basis to go for a long time ( the 99 is still so young) if u have the patience. Good length. A touch too much oak at this stage. 92

A testament to how much life this wine has. Young galatronas almost show little vintage variation ( barring the 04) but this 1999 is now on its way to something special. Still very alive and fresh with lots of tannin and oaky notes. Very much a pomerol wine in style. Lots of texture and length. 92+ and only just emerging
