Introduction

Server: Kim

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
1995 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay Cuvée LD USA, California, Sonoma County
94 points
Golden yellow. Nose of mature custard/vanilla, lightly baked golden apple, golden sultana, oxidized metal, with faint paraffin and chemical components. Palate is very fresh, tangerine citrus, creamy/oily texture to late palate, nicely balanced.

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
2003 Cantina Benincasa Montefalco Sagrantino Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
92 points
Initially very tight, this was decanted for a couple hours and gradually evolved into a big, leathery wine with a nose of ripe black cherries, sour plum and blackberry, scorched earth, spearmint, soaked nutty wood, and caramel edges. More leather on the rustic palate, with scorched earth, sour black plum, and blackberry quickly overtaken by strong chewy tannins. As expected, this wine is aggressively tannic, but it works for the Sagrantino style.
