Next - Chicago IL

Introduction

Next set aside the entire restaurant for Knightsbridge customers and allowed us to bring in some great wine. My first opportunity (probably only) for this great El Bulli menu. Some of the greatest single bites ever.

Flight 1 - Wine from my Table (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon France, Champagne
94 points
At a perfect place now, still vibrant with lots of citrus, but also showing some hints of brioche. Long and powerful, a great 1990 that is remaining more fresh than most other great Champagnes from the vintage.
White
2002 Louis Jadot Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Great aromas of spring flowers, ripe orchard fruit and new oak spice showing some intriguing elements of allspice and clove. Same fruit on palate, powerful, precise and very long.
Red
1988 Domaine Leroy Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
94 points
Open 3 hours before serving, not decanted. Started with great baking spice aromas, some good red fruit and hints of mushroom. Over time the aromatic depth and complexity became more rich and intense and floral. Flavors were mostly of red and black cherry with some good earthy elements in near background. Still firmly structured but very accessible, this peaked in terms of both power and charm after one hour in the glass. No question this will last for another decade or two, and perhaps may even get a little better from here. Thankfully I have one more bottle.
Red
1966 Maison Leroy Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
97 points
Absolutely sensational. After a moderately disappointing bottle of this wine late last year, Leroy 1966 Corton returns to the form I know and love from the previous 2 or 3 times I have had this wine. Aromas of red fruit, rose petals and sauteed mushroom. Flavors balance great earthy, mushroom character with good remaining red and black cherry. Long and powerful finish with some baking spice. Wine of the Night in a night of great wines.

Red
1969 Marey-Monge (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
90 points
Great fill, great color, although the cork fell part into the bottle. Good aromatic start combines floral and earthy elements with some lingering red fruit. Palate is also mostly earthy with remaining red fruit and very good baking spice. Clearly mature and at least a decade past its peak, this had moderate length and intensity.
Red
1943 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Stravecchio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Great treat to enjoy tonight, although frankly more interesting than great per se. Some dried rose petals to start, with sweet fruit aromas and flavors that make me suspect this was somehow fortified. Mostly earthy with good lingering red fruit and hints of licorice and black pepper.

Flight 2 - Wine Tasted from other Tables (4 notes)

Red
1966 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
92 points
Excellent baking spice aromas with plenty of deep earthy character and faint hints of red fruit. similar on palate, just far more subdued. Plenty of structure holding up firmly, helping provide good length and textures. Bottle had great color and a good fill (4.5 cm) but had just traveled NY-Chicago via truck two weeks prior.
Red
1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
90 points
Fresh red fruit aromas with plenty of baking spice and fresh herbs. Similar on palate, bright and balanced for the 1997 vintage. Modest length and intensity.
Red
1998 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
93 points
Black fruit aromas with flavors of black cherry and blackberry. Hints of spice at the start and finish. Very good structure provides great balance and length. Not quite as accessible as previous times I've tried this wine, it probably needed more time open in a decanter.
Red
2007 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
92 points
Big cherry aromas with modest spice. Sweet red and black cherry flavors with some licorice and black pepper. Moderate length and finesse, probably needed some more air.
