Introduction

Stopped by the Acker auction for lunch. Lots of great bottles were passed around.

Flight 1 (18 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Laurent-Perrier Champagne Cuvée Rosé Brut France, Champagne

Nose of strawberry cream and herbs. Palate was energetic and stoney with underlying rose, strawberry and white cherry tones. Not overly complex, but enjoyable.

Nice floral notes on the nose with honeyed pear, marzipan and crushed rocks. Palate was dense with lemon, white floral and pear tones with a nice mineral and herbal finish. One of the better SQN blancs I've had...more elegant and refined than I had expected.
White
1993 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Seemed slightly oxidized. Lots of butterscotch, lychee, pear and lemon on the nose. Palate had lithe citrus, floral and roasted grain notes. Not sure this was 100% on today - then again, I had a sip about 2-3 hours after it was opened.

2007 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Beautiful wine. Nose had seashells, subtle flint, lemon and pear. The palate was just beautiful with great floral and peach tones layered over crushed rocks and flint notes. Really enjoyable chardonnay that paired well with some tuna crudo.

A great showing. Great orchard fruit with lychee, subtle apricot, herbs and peach. The palate was firm but had layers of tropical fruits - especially lychee and nectarine. Had nice cool minerality that did a good job cooling the plush fruit down a bit. A great showing.
White
2002 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

One of the better white burgundies I've had lately. Great orange and lemon on the nose with white peach and flinty undertones. Palate was electric featuring sweet lemon, peach, nectarine, flinty tones and vanilla. So good.

1978 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

From magnum. Dark complexion, with a nose of mint, underbrush, dusty dark fruit and tobacco. Palate is showing hints of those yummy tertiary tones from Pauillac - balsamic, roasted herbs, and dried cherries. Seemed to be in a great place - loved it.

Compared to the '78 Latour this was a bit more advanced. More balsamic and mushroom on the palate compared to the dark fruited Latour. This was still quite good - the lithe floral and berry tones mixed well with subtle espresso and earth tones. Great stuff, thanks Jeff.

Nose of balsamic, soy, dark floral notes and subtle cherry. The palate was mature with wet leaves, dried tobacco, dark cherry and herbs. The great part about this wine was the grip the palate still had. Despite being mature, it still had nice energy and tension on the palate.

Great dried floral and tobacco on the nose with lots of red fruit and earth. Loved its mineral-edge that combined with gorgeous dark fruit, mint, soil and truffle. The palate was relatively soft which suggested to me that it's drinking close to peak. Great stuff.

1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Another great bottle and one of my favorite 1990s. Incredibly dark and meaty nose with cedar, tobacco, and dark fruit. The palate is still so dense - full of dark fruit graphite, herbs, and minerals. Heaven in a glass.

1998 Vieux Château Certan France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A real beauty. Rich tobacco, dark fruit and espresso on the nose. The palate had a hint of chocolate to it with dark and dense fruit - great minerality and energy, too. Thought this was balanced really well and the oak gave it body without drying it out. Showed really well.

Beautiful nose of tobacco, dried herbs and rich red fruit - really elegant and poised. Its palate was so silky and elegant. Loads of red fruit, layered with red florals, tilled earth, mushroom and clove. Killer wine that showed really well today.

Wasn't a huge fan of this. The nose was nice with meaty notes, dark fruit, and lilacs. The palate, on the other hand, was sickingly sweet and candied. Given the other beautiful wines at the table, I poured this out to focus on the other stuff!

2009 Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Decanted for about 90 minutes before drinking. Incredibly dense and sweet dark fruit...as is the case with many 2009s at this point. With more air, earthy undertones began to show themselves. You have to hope that with time, these sweet and dense 2009s with shed some of their fruit - if/when that happens these will be amazing.

Seemed to have a little bit more earth compared to the '09 Jadot CdlR drank alongside it. This was a little darker, a little earthier and had a bit more tension on the palate. A great showing with a lot of potential.

Hard to get a read on this one. The nose had dark red fruit, subtle earth and mineral - but was so tight that the flavors were hard to really distinguish. The palate drank pretty well, though, with nice red fruit, spices and some earth. Will need more time for this 2005 to really show its stuff.

Nose of tar, floral notes and dark red fruit. Thought the structure was a bit less intense than I expected, so the wine was a bit more accessible and open. Palate had nice red fruit with nice earthy tones layered on top of silky, elegant floral notes. Thought this was great, but will need time to develop those secondary and tertiary tones.
