Flight 1 (1 note)
White
1999 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets
Medium gold. Nose is mature, with buttery stone fruit, hints of soil. Medium/full bodied on the palate, peach, notes of soil and butter, a touch of orangey acidity on the good length, seamless finish. Very good indeed, and a point.
Flight 2 (4 notes)
Red
2002 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey
Crisp red fruited nose, cherries, a touch of soil. Quite simple, but likeable. Medium bodied on the palate, firm tannins, red cherries, notes of soil, again no huge complexity or depth, medium length crisp finish. Good +.
Red
2001 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes
Lovely aromatic nose, strawberries, spice, floral notes. Light/medium bodied on the palate, attractive strawberry fruit, fine integrated tannins, good fresh acidity, notes of earth on the gentle but lingering finish. Very good.
Red
1999 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley
Serious, deep colour, very little bricking. Intense, dark fruited, youthful but complex nose. Dark cherry, some blackberry, vanilla, spice. Medium/full bodied, black fruit, vanilla, notes of vanilla and a touch of pine, firm but fine tannins, vibrant acidity, slightly firm but very long on the finish. Needs time but potentially excellent.
Red
2000 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras
Pure, red fruited nose, hints of vanilla, mineral and floral notes. Medium bodied, this bottle a touch firm and closed, but opening up a little with time on glass to show strawberries, cream and minerals on the good length, firm finish. VGI.
Flight 3 (4 notes)
Red
2001 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin
Aromatic, light, airy, plum and black cherry fruit, truffle, liquorice, lovely fresh acidity, lingering harmonious finish. Lovely.
Red
1995 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin
Youthful, deep colour. Intense, black fruited nose, vanilla, spice. Brooding. Quite full bodied on the palate, a touch chunky still with firm tannins, but plenty of depth too and with more time could well be excellent.
Red
2000 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques
Notes becoming a touch sparse at this time, but this was rich with plum and blackberry fruit, plenty of vanilla and spice, quite attractive on the nose but rather dominated by its big, furry tannins on the palate.
Red
2000 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne
Notes now very thin, but this was mature, gamey, earthy, truffly with underlying pure red fruit, fine integrated tannins and a teasing very good length finish. Very good indeed.
Flight 4 (1 note)
White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Château Rieussec
Notes now non-existent, but this was broad and rich, with rpe stone fruit but also welcome, fresh, orangey acidity. Very good indeed and an excellent match for the tart.
