Introduction

Hosted by Sigel's with guests Lilian Barton-Sartorius and Jean-Charles Cazes. New Executive Chef, John Tesar.

Flight 1 - Cocktail Reception (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Gosset Champagne Brut Excellence France, Champagne
88 points
Very nice, light wine with a hint of toasted honey in the background with some sweetness to the crisp finish.

Flight 2 - First Course (1 note)

Seared Diver Scallop (singular--great--wanted more), Celery Root Puree with Herb Sea Broth

White
2004 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc de Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux
88 points
Very light in color with a bit of apricot and sweet rhubarb on the palette, and a very crisp finish.

Flight 3 - Second Course & the 2004s (6 notes)

Mullard Duck with Braised Salsify, Clover Honey and Thyme

Red
2004 Château Marbuzet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
86 points
Very fruit forward aromas initially--the wine did start to open up after 45 minutes. Pleasant, but not extremely complex.
Red
2004 Château Ormes de Pez France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
87 points
Quite a bit of red fruit aromas that made the wine pleasant, but not really inspiring.
Red
2004 Château Langoa Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
A hint of oak and vanilla aromas, with integrated tannins that indicated potential. After 45 minutes, still a bit of vanilla present.
Red
2004 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Not the typical Lynch-Bages--characteristics seemed more muted. Nice tannins and approachable now.
Red
2004 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Definitely the darkest red color of the 2004s tonight. Beautiful black currant aromas that typically would indicated a huge, powerful wine, yet very light on the palette. My favorite of the 2004s.
Red
2004 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
90 points
This was the most tannic of the 2004s, but possibly could have the most potential. Fairly fruit forward nose--this wine needs much more time.

Flight 4 - Third Course (3 notes)

Mixed Grill of: Roasted lamb chop with white beans and garlic; Rib Eye with truffled shoestring potatoes (awesome); braised short rib with southern greens (amazingly tender)

Red
2001 Château Marbuzet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
87 points
Initially seemed very acidic, which took away from the overall experience. Improved a bit with time.
Red
2000 Château Les Ormes de Pez France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
88 points
Pleasant wine, with some earth and herb characteristics and fairly strong tannins. My guess would be to let this have more time.
Red
2000 Château Langoa Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Classic wine that was initially still fairly tannic, but opened up after 45 minutes. Give this more time--really has potential to be a glorious wine.

Flight 5 - Cheese Course (3 notes)

Prince de Claverolle - Sheep's Milk from the French Pyrenees; Chaubier - French Tomme-style Mi-Chevre (1/2 goat's milk, 1/2 cow's milk); Parmigiano-Reggiano - Italian Cow's Milk

Red
1995 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Classic Lynch-Bages. Outstanding.
Red
1995 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
89 points
Had alongside the 1995 Ch Lynch-Bages and the 1995 Ch Cos d'Estournel. Just did not seem as deep as the other two. I actually preferred the style of the younger 2004 Leoville Barton. Seemed to have a bit of background caramelized sugar sweetness on the finish that was interesting.
Red
1995 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
95 points
My WOTN. The most complex wine of the night, with deep aromas involving black and red currant that did not overwhelm the senses, yet a very smooth texture and finish. Showing extremely well right now—awesome wine.

Flight 6 - Dessert Course (1 note)

Traditional Apple Tatin with Crème Anglaise

White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
88 points
Very nice dessert wine with pleasant sweetness and a hint of tropical fruit. Missing some of the botrytis characteristics (and complexity) that I love, though.
