Visiting Jacquesson

Dizy, Champagne

Introduction

Spent a wonderful September morning at Champagne Jacquesson, one of the best, (if not the very best) negociants in Champagne. We were guided for almost three hours by Monsieur Jean-Hervé Chiquet who together with his brother Laurent owns the house and makes the wine. He kindly demonstrated their methods in the vineyards as well as in the cellar and concluded our visit with a tasting. We also got an excellent insight to the philosophy of the house. Even though Jacquesson is a negociant (NM), they grow almost all of their grapes by themselves, and only buy from good friends and from the same villages they farm themselves. Nowadays they don't make a typical NV at all, contrary to almost every other producer in the region. Instead, they aim to make the best possible wine every year, ditching the idea of never-changing "house-style". Thus, the 700-series cuvée is the only blended(between vineyards) wine of the house and its base vintage can be noted of the annually growing number (735 = 2007). In addition to the 700-series cuvée, they also make four single-vineyard, single-variety vintage wines. However, they do not make them every year, but only when the the vineyard is able to produce a great wine with an unique character and its wine is not needed elsewhere in the 700-series blend. These unique wines are of absolute top quality and compare favorably to any prestige cuvees of the bigger houses.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvée No. 735 France, Champagne
Ripe yellow fruits and bread, quite a classic nose. Well balanced and intense on the palate. Delicious as always.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvée No. 736 France, Champagne
Not yet commercially released. Based on the excellent 2008 vintage. Compared to 735 this is more powerful and structured, nose still perhaps a bit muted but started to open with some time in the glass. Should become excellent, maybe one for the cellar too.
White - Sparkling
2002 Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Grand Cru Avize Champ Cain France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Single-vineyard BdB from Avize, 1,3 hectares planted in the early 60s. What a wonderful spectrum of aromas: citrus, dried fruits, cream, honey, almonds and minerality. Also very smooth and very structured, quite full bodied. Will probably get even better with time, and that is saying a lot considering that this is already really, really good. Very unique blanc de blancs on par with the very best. Highly recommended.
Rosé - Sparkling
2007 Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Dizy Terres Rouges Rosé France, Champagne
Not commercially released yet. Single vineyard Pinot Noir from Dizy. Inspecting the colour, it's obvious that this is not a typical rosé champagne at all. Colour is very deep, bordering some of the lighter still red wine pinot noirs. Saignée method, has some character from the skins. Perfumed red berries and spicy aromas, full-bodied and vinous on the palate with distinctive minerality. Impressive structure, a tall wine. Probably not everybodys cup of tea, but works for me! Perhaps not ideal for casual sipping, this would go well with food, even richer fare.
