Introduction

This was an absolutely lovely tasting and dinner. Amazing wines, all bottles perfectly stored and sourced directly from the Chateaux and domaines, loads of expert knowledge around the table and fantastic hosts. Genuinely amazing evening!

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
91 points
Very elegant, not too sweet, usual muscat floral notes are not too intense, very interesting and great as an aperitif

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Rosé France, Champagne
92 points
Loads of strawberries and very elegant but rather light, especially when compared to the 69 DP right next who had much more power. I'm not a rose champagne guy I start to realize...
White - Sparkling
1969 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon France, Champagne
94 points
Super powerful, very dense and with a long long finish. Quite oxidative notes apples and walnuts. Very good!

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2004 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
88 points
Nice balanced, very red berries and strawberry driven nose, still feels young
Red
2009 Gantenbein Pinot Noir Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Graubünden, Fläsch
91 points
For me the clear winner of this flight, for others not so much. Very nice notes of classic pinot, balanced yet powerful enough.
Red
2010 Jauslin Pinot Noir Hohle Gasse Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Basel-Landschaft
88 points
Very fruit forward and a little alcoholic, quite strong compared to the other two and a bit out of balance but still good

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
1978 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
97 points
This was a perfect bottle, color was a bright red with no brown or orange rims at all. I guessed northern rhone but was 20 years too young. Absolutely impressive nose of eucalyptus, black tea and lots of blood and minerals in the palate. This baby has so much tannin left that it's easy imaginable that it will live for another 30 years

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
I have to say, I'm quite impressed with this wine, super ready to drink and I mean that in the best possible way. Cinnamon and blue and red berries in the nose, super smooth in the finish. Stunner for the vintage really
Red
1996 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Still very young, nearly monolithic, big bold but still beautiful. very long finish

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
1989 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
Big, bold, super bold and massive tannin structure! Meet the Mission 89!

Feels oh so young with the flamboyant cherries and dense palate, but truly a stunning wine.
Red
1990 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Walnut, leather, chamomile tea, round and approachable, felt much more mature then the Mission 89 next to it.

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red
1962 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
96 points
Loads of dried figs in the nose, super interesting palate with a great balance but endlessly ongoing finish. Makes you smile
Red
1970 Château Lafleur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
96 points
Super awesome!! Laser precision in the nose and the palate, massive body and a nose of mixed herbs and black cherries. GREAT STUFF

Flight 8 (2 notes)

Red
1961 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
96 points
Surprisingly not the wine of the night for me (78 La Chappelle), but that's not to say that it was not ridiculously good. Leather, super super concentrated in the palate, huge tannin structure, very long and extremely elegant. Interestingly enough I smelled chestnuts next to all those still great fruit and berry notes.
Red
1950 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Probably the wine, that I enjoyed most to drink this evening, as it was so round and creamy and still rich but not too heavy. Exotic notes of eucalyptus and then the classic mature Bordeaux notes of leather, cigar, cedar wood. Really impressive!!!!
