Chez Schmidt - Chicago IL

Introduction

To mourn my 50th birthday I had dinner with my Burgundy group and opened a few wines for the occasion, with the group also contributing a few more fun gems. Overall, not quite as many great bottles as I hoped for; also a few more disappointing bottles, but alas, that's the risk of older bottles.

Flight 1 - Bubbles (2 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Rosé France, Champagne
94 points
From magnum. Starts with aromas of strawberry and raspberry with some rose and summer flowers. Very ripe and intense bt also lots of balance and textures onto long, elegant finish.

White - Sparkling
1962 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon France, Champagne
From magnum. Mature apple aromas and flavors with some earthy elements. Still shows hints of effervescence and charm, but clearly past its peak.

Flight 2 - Montrachet (4 notes)

White
1992 Louis Latour Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
90 points
Very fresh for its age. Ripe. apple, good spice on both nose and palate. Moderate length and intensity. Slightly short.

White
1992 Domaine Jacques Prieur Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Ripe apple and pear to start aromatically. Flavors of both orchard and stone fruit, ripe and powerful. Starts showing age on finish. At its peak now, perhaps just slightly better a few years back.
White
1996 Domaine Jacques Prieur Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Oxidized.
White
2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Fresh, fat, very ripe stone fruit aromas. Peach and apricot large scaled. Best young, given some heat coming through at the end.

Flight 3 - Bonus White Flight (4 notes)

White
1966 Maison Leroy Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Started with a bit of sulfur, which is good, having kept this wine wonderfully fresh. Huge orchard fruit, slightly nutty, shockingly fresh and charming, lots of power. If tasted blind, I'd have thought this 20 years younger.
White
1978 Maison Leroy Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Dark, faded and uninteresting, much like the prior bottle from the same source, which was also the same source for an amazing bottle we opened last year.
White
1978 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Very similar to another bottle from the same source we had a few months ago. Very ripe and lush, lots of concentration, then somewhat simpler on finish.
White
2000 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Chapelot France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
Fresh and energetic wine with good apple and pear, then some lemon on moderately long finish.

Flight 4 - 1962 (3 notes)

Red
1962 Louis Latour Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
89 points
Moderate fill and condition, but this held up very well, still showing some lingering fruit along with very elegant earthy flavors and textures. Much better than I expected.
Red
1962 Marey-Monge Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
92 points
Big, ripe and lush, which led to a healthy discussion of whether or not this wine was 100% Pinot Noir, on which there was not tablewide consensus. Still, this was very charming with great classically Vosne spice.

1962 Maison Albert Bichot Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune
I opened the two best 375ml bottles I had. Very big difference between the two. One was entirely earthy with faint spice hints and a little muddy, probably 82 points. The other bottle (betterf ill) had lingering signs of fruit, better spice and greater balance, and was perhaps 87 points.

Flight 5 - Some Random Older Burgundy (4 notes)

Red
1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
flawed
I had low expectations given the bottle showed signs of leakage and was slightly wet around the capsule, plus color was very pale. Smelled terrible, I don't know why I bothered to taste, but it was even worse. Totally faded and oxidized.
Red
1964 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
92 points
Bottle was in good condition, good fill (~3.5 cm). Very earthy aromas, with some soy and Asian spice elements. Not much remaining fruit on either nose or palate, but there was a fundamental good level of concentration. Very enjoyable, just not as complex or long as I would have hoped.
Red
1949 Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
95 points
What a pleasant surprise. Long, exotic and powerful - incredibly spice-driven with great mushroom and forest floor character. Long and superbly exciting. Note this is from the old Domaine Marion, which was later bottled by Bouchard Aine and ultimately (I believe) became the Domaine Prieuré Roch. Memorable.
Red
1978 Camille Giroud Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
flawed
Slightly corked.

Flight 6 - 1998 Grand Cru (4 notes)

Red
1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
flawed
Reductive to start, but neither fresh not evolved flavors ever really emerged. Tough to say what was wrong here.
Red
1998 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
flawed
Corked.
Red
1998 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
92 points
Charming overall, just far more subdued than ever before, this came across as somewhat backward despite plenty of airtime before being served.
Red
1998 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
92 points
Very good spice start with lots of black cherry aromas. Still mostly fresh, just hints of emerging sous bois development, but very elegant overall, even if slightly short.

Flight 7 - 1962 Bordeaux (Mostly) (5 notes)

Red
1959 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Lots of mushroom and tobacco to start, then more of the same on palate along with some black fruit. Good length and persistence. Better than another bottle from the same source we had this summer.
Red
1962 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Very ripe mature fruit. Larger scaled than expected. Lots of earth, lots of fruit. Surprisingly easy to enjoy for a wine its age, not very nuanced.
Red
1962 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Terrible fill, low shoulder, so expectations were also low. This was far more mature than I would have hoped, then slightly muddy.
Red
1962 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
78 points
Old and tired.
Red
1962 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
I thought it worth adding to the lineup because (1) it was a 1962 and (2) it is probably the lowest scoring wine ever from Parker, somewhere in the 50s if my memory is correct. Parker was correct.

Flight 8 - 1982 Guigal (Mostly) (4 notes)

Red
1982 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
92 points
Bottle in great condition, purchased at auction a year ago. Really charming spice and a balance of fruit and mushroom character. Perhaps ever-so-slightly past its peak, but still drinking beautifully right now. Great in this flight.
Red
1982 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
More mature and advanced than fresh, lots of black fruit, lots of spice. Great power and concentration, very good length and persistence. Wonderful in this flight, but clearly this was far less exciting than the 1982 Mouline also in this flight.
Red
1982 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
96 points
This was absolutely sensational, one of tonight's absolute highlights. Perfumed, spice driven aromas with lush, ripe black fruit with some liqueur notes. Blackberry flavors with some earthy elements, great, great spice on the palate. Long, energetic and powerful from middle through finish.

1980 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Masculine and brawny, easy to appreciate, just not quite as exciting tonight as the 1982s in the flight.

Flight 9 - Wine to Finish (3 notes)

White - Fortified
1830 Barbeito Madeira Malmsey Portugal, Madeira
97 points
Caramel and fig with great texture and incredible length. Late night, so few notes, but this was many people's favorite wine tonight.
Red - Fortified
1963 Graham Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
Fresh fruit aromas for its age. Sweet nd forward on palate. Big and robust at the start and middle. Not quite as log, nuanced or complex as I would have hoped. Identical the second day as the first.
Red - Fortified
1964 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional Portugal, Douro, Porto
91 points
Lighter styled Port to start vs. the Grahams 63, but very long and intense on the finish. More nuanced and elegant than powerful. Ends much more interesting than it starts. Came across as simpler when finished the second day.

Flight 10 - Bonus Bottles from Thorughout the Evening (4 notes)

Red
2009 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Very fat and ripe aromas and flavors. Lots of blackberry, boysenberry, very lush and powerful. Very easy to enjoy, not particularly subtle.
Red
2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Popped and poured. Lots of red fruit aromas and flavors. Good meaty spice aromas, then more subtle on palate. Fairly firm throughout, would have benefited from more air or more time in the cellar.
Red
2000 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
91 points
From magnum, popped and poured. Red fruit aromas and flavors, very good spice. Forward on both nose and palate, this was charming, accessible and balanced. In a good place today.
Red
2009 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Decanted for a few hours, but in need of plenty of time in the cellar. This has so much extract and great concentrate that it will become a great wine, even if still (no surprise) too primary and jammy today. Great, great potential.
