Santa Fe, NM

Tasted December 23, 2012 - December 31, 2012 by tooch with 469 views

Flight 1 - Day 1 (5 notes)

Opened some bottles with the family.

White
2011 Albert Mann Riesling Cuvée Albert France, Alsace
88 points
Nose of peach, subtle petrol, and stone. The palate was razor sharp with great minerality, tropical fruit and acidity. Great value riesling.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Hubert Clavelin Crémant du Jura Brut - Comté Tete de Cuvee France, Jura, Crémant du Jura
89 points
Subtle oxidation on the nose...some nuts, green apple, fresh herbs and vanilla. The palate is insanely crisp, firm and rocky. Don't expect a doughy sparkling wine here...this is pure chardonnay...no nonsense.

White - Sparkling
2010 Albert Mann Crémant d'Alsace France, Alsace, Crémant d'Alsace
87 points
Lots of apples on the nose with some hints of vanilla and pear. The palate is nice and firm with good pear notes and a soft apple finish.
White
2010 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling von blauem Schiefer Reserve Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Lots of exotic peach, pear and mango notes on the nose. With some air, a layer of petrichor, mineral and lanolin built creating a really nice perfume. The palate was very tropical with a fine mineral cut on the finish. Drinking very well.
White
2011 Birgit Eichinger Riesling 1ÖTW Reserve Gaisberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
90 points
Really nice riesling! Very tart and stony nose with cherry, lemon, peach, mango and wet rocks. The palate was dense and fruited with lots of tropical notes and elegant lanolin elements. Drinking very nicely.

Flight 2 - Day 2 (5 notes)

Opened some bottles with the family.

Red
2010 Domaine des Moirots Givry France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry
90 points
Just beautiful cranberry color in the glass. With some air this fleshed out a bit and had beautiful pomegranate, cranberry, cherry and floral notes. The palate had a subtle mushroom note that gave it a rustic sense. Overall, drinking well and a nice value for sure!
White
2011 Albert Mann Riesling Cuvée Albert France, Alsace
88 points
Another nice showing. Great orchard fruit, less tropical and more apples and pears. Nice minerality and acidity on the finish. Went well with some spicy mole!
Red
2010 Domaine des Moirots Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
87 points
Clean red fruit, nice earthy undertones. Not overly complex, but lovely and gulpable!
Red
2007 Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
81 points
Big nose of cherry, smoke and vanilla. Certainly a crowd-pleaser this evening, it didn't have anything close to a second-gear or secondary characteristics to really grab my attention.
White
2009 Foxglove Chardonnay Central Coast USA, California, Central Coast
87 points
Nicely balanced, not overly gummy...clean chardonnay fruit with a touch of oak. Really nice.

Flight 3 - Day 3 (3 notes)

Opened some bottles with the family.

White
2010 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling von blauem Schiefer Reserve Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Another great bottle. Lots of tropical fruit with elegant lanolin and pear tones. Great acidity.
Red
2011 Pierre Gonon Ardèche Les Iles Feray France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Ardèche
90 points
Lots of dark sappy fruit with some meaty tones. Give this some air...at first it can be a bit hedonistic. Letting it breath gave it a more elegant character with more secondary meaty and earthy tones.
White
2011 Birgit Eichinger Grüner Veltliner 1ÖTW Reserve Gaisberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
88 points
A nice gruner with vivid banana peel and peach on the nose. The palate was spicy and nuanced with white pepper, peach, apple and pear notes.

Flight 4 - Day 4 (3 notes)

Opened some bottles with the family.

White
2011 Birgit Eichinger Riesling 1ÖTW Reserve Gaisberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
90 points
Another fresh and inviting riesling. Nice tropical fruit notes with great minerality and balance. A really nice value.
White
2010 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling von blauem Schiefer Reserve Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Same note as before. Really nice expression of riesling...great combination of minerality, fruit and acid.
White
2011 Albert Mann Riesling Cuvée Albert France, Alsace
89 points
Lots of stonefruit, lanolin, and subtle hints of petrol. Great value as usual.

Flight 5 - Dinner at 315 Restaurant (2 notes)

These were bought off the list at 315 Bistro in Santa Fe, NM.

White
2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
88 points
A fine riesling. Nose was inviting with peach, lychee and lanolin. Palate was energetic and nicely composed. Great vivid fruits with cutting minerality on the finish. Great value.
Red
2005 Arcadian Syrah Westerly Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
89 points
A very nice Californian syrah. Rich, dark fruit on the nose with a meaty edge to it. The palate had a rustic character at first with deeper meat and pepper tones at first. With some time, the rusticity seemed to fade with juicy dark fruit taking its place. I don't have much experience with Arcadian, but this is a great value.

Flight 6 - Day 6 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Puzelat-Bonhomme Pinot Noir Touraine France, Loire Valley, Touraine
flawed
Very vegetal with lots of earth and spice notes. The usually exciting and edgy palate was a bit out of whack this time...seemed very volatile. Peaks and valleys of intense acidity, earth, dark fruit and mushroom. Compared to the other bottles I've had, this seemed a bit flawed.
Red
2007 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
90 points
Thought this was an improvement from the first bottle I tried. A bit more presence this time with great earthy notes, pure and fresh dark fruit with nice floral lift. The palate had great energy and verve, but still had a density to the flavor. Lots of dark fruit and earthy notes made this quite nice!

Flight 7 - Day 7 (4 notes)

New Year's Eve bottles.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Nicolas Maillart Champagne Premier Cru Platine France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
90 points
Chalky aromas with lots of peach and pear notes. The palate had that bright orchard fruit note, subtle yeasty tones. Nice cut and energy as usual.
Red
2011 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Cuvée Gamay France, Loire Valley, Touraine
85 points
Insanely green and bitter upon opening...reminded me of some of the green meanies that are occasionally seen with 2004 Burgundies. The palate was more enjoyable with some raspberry, plum and stone. Seemed to be in a truly funky spot.
Red
2010 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Cuvée Gamay France, Loire Valley, Touraine
91 points
A wonderful gamay. Great fruit on the nose and palate. Dark and lithe berry and plum tones integrate nicely with some brambly undergrowth tones. Drinking very well.
Red
2010 Byron Pinot Noir USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
83 points
Very dark and toasty. Hard to pin this as a pinot as the darkness and weight on the palate seemed to push it into a syrah or even cabernet feel. The palate was sweet and spicy...lots of plums, dark berries and smoke.
