Introduction

The chef is a great guy and agreed to prepare a tasting menu to pair with our Italian wine night. Six guys, six bottles. Great food.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2010 Vietti Roero Arneis Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero
91 points
Pale yellow. Flowers, apple and pear on the nose. Good acidity and a hint of minerality. Medium finish. Really very enjoyable. Did not do much for the bland tuna crudo it was paired with and might do better against something with a little kick. (4+13+17+7)
Red
2000 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
Nose was a little funky. Blew off quickly. Dried cherries, pencil shavings, hint of vanilla. Medium body and tannins. Very drinkable. Excellent chianti. (4+12+17+7)
Red
2004 Renieri Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
Very nice. Nose was expressive - cherries, floral scents. Smooth and medium bodied without the excess acidity you usually find in mid-level Brunellos. Finish was smooth and clean as well. (4+13+16+7)
Red
2007 Tenuta Villa Rosa Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
89 points
Straight forward Barolo. Nose was fairly closed. Cherries, subtle leather. Moderate tannins and body. Slightly acidic on the finish. Good, but nothing to write home about. (4+12+16+7)
Red
2003 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
94 points
Fantastic wine. Nose of spice, chocolate, and a background of cedar. Hints of amarone. Medium bodied with fine tannins. Cherries and other red/black fruit. Drying on the finish. My note does not do it justice. (5+14+17+8)
White - Sparkling
2010 Vignaioli di S. Stefano (Ceretto) Moscato d'Asti Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti
90 points
Pale golden color. A few bubbles. Clean, fresh nose. Sweet (but not cloying), crisp, and refreshing. Very nice way to end a meal. (4+12+17+7)

Closing

The Vietti surprised everyone with its crispness and lightness as did the Moscato. However, the Flaccianello was easily the wine of the night.
