Introduction

The monthly Hauser group tasting featured the wines of Australia & New Zealand, presented by the local distributor representing the Yalumba portfolio.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Jansz Wine Company Premium Rosé Brut Australia, Tasmania
85 points
Light golden color with a faint pinkish copper tint. Very simple bouquet features melon notes and not much else. Melon and apple notes on the palate with a hint of clay on the finish. Slightly hollow through the midpalate and a bit austere on the finish. Domino liked this a little better than I, awarding it 87 pts. $26.95. Widely available over $20, and a wide range of better options too.
White
2012 Palliser Estate Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
88 points
Light golden color with notes of cat urine, grass and green pepper, turning to jalapeno as it breathes in the glass. Medium-bodied with god acidity and flavors of jalapeno pepper and goosberry. Decent finish. 87-88 pts for Domino. $19.95.
White
2011 Vasse Felix Chardonnay Margaret River Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
90 points
Deep golden color. Notes of mineral, fig, pear and apple with a lovely smoky/toasted overtone. Medium-bodied with a good bit of acidity and weight across the palate. Flavors of white fruit, apple, minerals and oak spice. 90+ pts for me, 90-91 for Domino. $27.95.
White
2012 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
86 points
Yellow color. Peach and citrus notes dominate the bouquet. The palate shows apple and softened citrus tones, but it is flabby and has a harsh quality on the finish. My score may be a point or two generous actually. $16.95.
Red
2008 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
87 points
Open fermenter; 12 mos in French oak. Deep ruby color. Notes of cherry, spice, rhubarb and cranberry. Medium-bodied. Cherry and red fruit qualities with a decent finish. I'd have liked a little more acid here, as it seems just a touch flabby. 86 pts for Domino.
Red
2011 Yalumba Grenache Bush Vine Australia, South Australia, Barossa
88 points
100% Grenache w/avg vine age of 65 years; aged in neutral 3 to 4 year old barrels. Aromas of spice, clay, pepper, brush pile, dried leaves and red fruit. Full-bodied and ripe, showing lots of ripe red fruit, plum, white pepper and alcohol. 87 pts for Domino. $19.95.
Red
2007 Langmeil Cabernet Sauvignon The Blacksmith Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
88 points
Garnet color. Aromas of red currant, dusty red earth, vanilla and oak spices. Medium-bodied with softening tannins. Spicy red fruit dominates, hints of vanilla as well. A bit stemmy. $27.95.
Red
2011 Langmeil Hangin' Snakes - Shiraz Viognier Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
89 points
96% Shiraz with 4% Viognier. Inky garnet color with dark fruit, blackberry, clay and floral notes. Full-bodied with firm, sweet tannins and dark fruit flavors dominating the palate. Nice finish. $18.95.
Red
2008 Yalumba FDR1A Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
90 points
62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Shiraz. Deep garnet color. Stemmy dark fruit, wood and perfumed floral aromas. Full-bodied; firm tannins. Flavors of dark fruit, juicy red berries, vanilla and oak. Powerful finish, with lots of dark fruit and oak.
