Flight 1 (43 notes)

Red
2010 Pearl Morissette Estate Winery Cabernet Franc Cuvée Madeline Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Twenty Mile Bench VQA
Tomato leaf and menthol aromas. Then classic Cab Franc palate profile but slightly riper than the Loire norm. Fresh with a food-friendly structure. Very good. 17/20.
White
2011 Pearl Morissette Estate Winery Riesling Cuvée Blackball Barrique Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Twenty Mile Bench VQA
Floral with a little stone fruit. Lacks the concentration of a great German riesling. Acidity isn't quite there either. 15/20.
Red
2011 Domaine Sarnin-Berrux Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
There's an acetic acid note masking the fruit. Palate is tart and a touch cidery. 14.5/20.
Red
2011 Domaine Sarnin-Berrux Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Valozières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru
Touch of VA again. Palate is riper than their other two reds. Lots of grippy tannin. Savoury finish. Good but not that exciting; maybe a case of decent fruit in the wrong hands. 16.5/20.
Red
2010 Domaine Guillot-Broux Bourgogne La Myotte France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Silky with decent depth of fruit. Very fresh. Great at Bourgogne level and should drink well over the next 3-4 years. 16+/20.
White
2011 Domaine Le Soula Trigone Blanc France, Vin de France
Stony aromas. Interesting sweet-savoury palate but just a little lacking in concentration. OK. 15.5/20.
Red
2011 Domaine Sarnin-Berrux Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Smells slighly powdery somehow. Strange. Tart palate. 15/20.
Red
2010 Domaine Guillot-Broux Mâcon-Cruzille Beaumont France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Cruzille
VA again (which is getting kinda boring). Very marked acidity. Tart and cidery. Might just be closed but not a whole lot of fun just now. 15.5/20.
Red
2011 Domaine Génot-Boulanger Pommard France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
Nose has that acid top note again which is difficult to get past. Decent palate though: earthy with ripe red cherry fruit. Fresh. Good length. 16.5/20.
Red
2010 Domaine Génot-Boulanger Volnay 1er Cru Les Roncerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Cool, mineral palate. Very accomplished; displays its premier cru pedigree. Lovely stuff. 17/20.
Red
2010 Domaine Génot-Boulanger Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru
Ripe and concentrated but you could drink this already. Excellent depth of fruit. Great potential. 17+
Orange
N.V. Domaine Le Soula La Macération Du Soula L10 France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes
Beautiful nose that's equal parts mineral and savoury. Very tightly wound but - like the Soula Blanc - very promising. 17/20. 2014+
White
2011 Matassa Côtes Catalanes Blanc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes
Juicy fruit with a stony overlay. 16.5/20.
Red
2011 Hospices de Saumur Saumur-Champigny Clos Cristal France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
Sappy, stemmy notes and a touch of green pepper on the nose. Palate is just a little hollow. OK. 15.5/20.
White
2010 Domaine Le Soula Le Soula Blanc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes
Gorgeous nose: similar to a top white burgundy but there's a little melon in there as well. Very taut just now but masses of flavour. Great potential. 17+ 2015+
Red
2011 Matassa Côtes du Roussillon Rouge France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon
Pongy nose with a touch of cider. But a cool, mineral palate with a mix of red fruit and herbs. Really good. Refreshing. Lovely stuff. 16.5/20.
Red
2010 Hospices de Saumur Saumur-Champigny Boutifolle France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
Full-bodied and mouthfilling. Tastes like it's had some expensive oak thrown at it but it's nicely integrated. This is just about as powerful and intense as Loire Cab Franc gets. But it works. Great. 17/20.
White
2009 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Clos Sand France, Alsace
Aromatic with a little melon and stone fruit. Concentrated but juicy. Quite tense at the moment. Good. 16/20.
Orange
2011 Matassa Côtes Catalanes Cuvée Alexandria France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes
Really distinctive nose of ginger and oriental spice. Lots of ripe grapefruit on the palate but fresh finish. Good. 16.5/20.
White
2009 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Leimental France, Alsace
Nose is a little sweeter than the Clos Sand but there are also some mineral notes. Good concentration and a lovely streak of acidity to keep you on your toes. Great. 16.5/20.
Red
2011 Judith Beck Zweigelt Goldberg Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Full-bodied, warm and spicy but there are some mineral notes lurking in the background. Great. 16.5/20.
Red
2011 Hospices de Saumur Saumur-Champigny Les Murs Clos Cristal France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
Nose offers (surprisingly) dark fruit and also some oak spice. Fully ripe fruit but still beautifully fresh. The tannins are beginning to loosen their grip but I'd give this another year. Good. 16.5/20. 2014+
White
2009 Domaine Barmes-Buecher Riesling Hengst France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Tense and chewy with sweet mid-palate but lovely mineral intensity on the extended finish. Excellent. 17/20 2014+
Red
2010 Meinklang Zweigelt Graupert Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Concentrated with lots of sweet fruit and spice but nicely balanced. Good. 16.5/20.
Red
2009 Claus Preisinger Blaufränkisch Buehl Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Some blackcurrant and blackpepper aromas. Spicy palate with decent acidity. Quite taut just now. Good. 16.5/20.
Red
2011 Judith Beck Blaufränkisch Altenberg Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Nose is softer than the Zweigelt with a little autumnal fruit. Quite tightly wound with decent acid spine. Sweet attack then the black pepper comes through on the finish. Good. 16.5/20.
Red
2008 Demencia de Autor Bierzo Demencia Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo
Lovely ripe plum aromas with evidence of some expensive oak in the background. Fresh, mineral palate with the tannins just beginning to recede. Some herbal notes in there too. Excellent and I suspect its best years are still ahead of it. 17+ 2014+

Spicy, juicy palate. Fresh and decent length. Good. 16.5/20.
Red
2009 Péter Wetzer Soproni Silberberg Hungary, Észak-Dunántúl, Soproni
Greater concentration and intensity than the other two but still fresh. Masses of ripe fruit. Lots of tension too with a lovely mineral overlay. Huge wine considering it's only 12.7%. Excellent. 17+ 2015+
Red
2011 Ferdinando Principiano Barbera d'Alba Laura Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
Sweetly perfumed aromas. Palate is soft and juicy. A good glugger. 16/20.
Red
2009 Ferdinando Principiano Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Dusty, dark fruit. Tightly-packed tannin and quite a bit of spice. Elegant and fresh though with a lovely savoury finish. 17+ 2015+
Red
2011 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Torroja Vi de la Vila Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Lots of tannin but also a decent slatey quality. There's some sweet strawberry fruit lurking in the depths. Fresh finish. Good. 16.5+ 2015+
Red
2010 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat L'Arbossar Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Aromas of dried fruit but then, in contrast, a fresh, mineral palate. Elegant but just a little chewy right at the end. 17+ 2016+
Red
2010 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Les Manyes Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Served chilled. Funky/barnyardy nose. But palate is fresh and mineral (again). Chewier than the others and just a touch too sweet on the finish. 16.5-/20.
Red
2009 Meinklang St. Laurent Konkret Austria, Burgenland
Masses of sweet fruit - almost too much but it just about comes together. Not subtle though. 16/20.
Red
2000 Elio Sandri Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Nose was a little subdued initially but a few swirls reveal some leather and tar. Beautiful palate with preserved fruit and just a hint of candied orange. Stunning. 17.5/20
Red
2005 Elio Sandri Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Masses of tannin just now but there's a teasing glimpse of the silky wine that should eventually emerge. Great potential. 17+ 2015+
Red
2010 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Les Tosses Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Lovely floral perfume aromas. Then silky and elegant red fruit. Savoury but fresh with a mineral sheen. Excellent. 17+ 2014+
Red
2011 Ferdinando Principiano Langhe Nebbiolo Le Coste Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Some licorice top notes. Quite a lot of tannin but decent depth of dark fruit too. 16.5+ 2014+
Red
2007 Ferdinando Principiano Barolo Boscareto Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Spiced plum aromas and, again, slightly dusty. Massive wine just now with hints of cocoa and spice. It's very well balanced but I wouldn't go near it for a fair while yet. 17+ 2016+
Red
2009 Elio Sandri Barbera d'Alba Superiore Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba Superiore
Classic combo of dust, leather and plum on the nose. Palate is fresh but a little chewy. Decent backbone. Good. 16.5/20.
Red
2011 Péter Wetzer Soproni Spern Steiner Hungary, Észak-Dunántúl, Soproni
More mineral aromas than the Estate wine. Palate is fresh and mineral and elegant; just a little more refined. Great. 17/20.
Red
2011 Meinklang Blauburgunder Austria, Burgenland
Sweet, lifted aromas. Sweet start and then a little one-dimensional, but fresh. OK. 16/20.
