Introduction

This was a fun meet and greet for the group and to enjoy some outstanding wines and remarkable food. The freshly foraged morels were an extra special treat!

Flight 1 (11 notes)

Rosé
2012 Château Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
89 points
Pale salmon color. I just had a small sample of this, but it was very nice, strawberry, mineral, light, refreshing, balanced. 89+ to 90pts.
White - Off-dry
2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Very consistent, fusil on the start the quickly dissipates to subtle, minerals, bright on the nose with a tropical edge, pear, pineapple, floral. The palate is round, almost creamy, with great body and depth, tropical fruit, citrus, zesty, very fresh, mineral, long finish. 92+pts.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier France, Champagne
90 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. I found this bottle more to the citrus side than tree fruit, yeast, bread dough, good minerality. Always a nice drinker.

White
2008 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This was even better than the last bottle I recently had. The nose smoky, pain grille, lemon, coconut, citrus, mineral. The palate is bright and clean, deceptively powerful with concentrated flavors; all the while maintaining a classic stature. Lemon, citrus, stony minerals, crisp acids and modest oak. Everything about this wine says elegance and class. Perfectly balanced with a long penetrating finish. My #2 and group #2 WOTN.
White
2008 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
91 points
Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was typical of recent bottles, showing a creamy, rich style, on the buttery side, full body, moderate oak, citrus, lemon, some apple baked apple pie. As much as I like typically like this, I felt the Montelena was more complex and substantially better tonight.
Red
2007 Siduri Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
91 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This bottle was more like what I remember. Bright nose with lots of ripe fruit, not over the top, cherry, spice, berries, earthy, roses. The palate is medium full bodied for pinot, layered fruits, cherry, berry, with nice spiciness on the medium plus finish.
Red
2000 Château Pavie Decesse France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Very dark red color. This had the cork removed and replaced the night before and was decanted for 5 hours. Drank 1 glass over 1.5hrs. The nose is wonderful and open, showing a perfume of florals, sandalwood, earth and briar, with some savory meat and tar notes as well. The palate displayed power and concentration with some rough edges, not fully integrated even with a healthy decant. It continued to resolve over the next hour, but was not as finessed as the last bottle. There is nice dark berry fruit, licorice, mineral, spice, oak, cassis, and dried berries. Tannins are moderately firm, finish is long. My and group WOTN (8 of 9 1st place votes). 93+ to 94 pts.

Red
2007 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Very dark purple red color. Open the previous night, then decanted for 6.5hrs, drank 1 glass over 1.5 hrs. Nose has brooding black fruits, blackberry, creme de cassis, dry earth, graphite, oak, spice. The palate is inky, cassis, blackberry, blackberry liqueur, layered and deep, oak, spices, ripe round tannins, long finish. This was clearly too young, but really was showing promise to be quite special in another 4-5 years. My #3 WOTN. 93(+)pts.

Red
2003 Kaesler Shiraz The Bogan Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
91 points
Very dark red color with subtle bricking on the extreme margins. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose displays scorched earth, tar, menthol, white pepper, blackberry, black cherry. The palate is medium-full bodied, mature, fruit probably starting to slip a bit, blackberry, black cherry, scorched earth, some alcohol shows at times, pepper, spice, menthol. Medium finish. Drink now.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Cave Spring Riesling Icewine Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Niagara Peninsula VQA
87 points
Pale greenish color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose shows some nice tropical fruits, pineapple, apricot. The palate is sweet, tangerine, pine essence, spiced orange, tart fruit. The does not seem to be enough body or acid to carry the sweetness here. Pleasant, but quite expensve. 87+pts.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Királyudvar Tokaji Cuvée Ilona Hungary, Tokaji
91 points
Medium dark gold color. Didn't take detailed notes, full bodied, rich apricot and citrus, balanced, good stuff.
