Introduction

Picked up a selection of growers' champagnes in Epernay and went two by two at Chas's (with a couple of Bordeaux gatecrashing one night)

Flight 1 - First night (2 notes)

Guy Charbaut was a good start but the Perle Blanche probably the poorest of the flight

White - Sparkling
N.V. Guy Charbaut Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Premier Cru France, Champagne
91 points
Light bright golden yellow. Medium mousse. Light nose, hints of lemon which come through on the palate.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Perle Blanche Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Premier Cru France, Champagne
84 points
Light golden colour, medium to big mousse. Little bit of a yeasty nose palates a bit flat. Not great

Flight 2 - Second night (2 notes)

Best NV's of the week, both wines from Bouzy, the Baron probably just edged it for me.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Baron Dauvergne Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Privilège France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Light straw colour, fine, minimal mousse. Light nose, hints of lemon and a touch of yeast but nothing overpowering. Medium to full palate with a little nuttiness. Good long finish.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Maurice Vesselle Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Reservée Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Straw colour, brioche nose, hint of lemon. Fine mousse. Lemon comes through on the palate. Reasonable finish.

Flight 3 - Third night (2 notes)

More champagne but nothing stood out

White - Sparkling
N.V. Lamiable Champagne Grand Cru Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Light straw colour, possibly a hint of green Little nose, a whiff of fermentation. Spritzy mousse. Baked lemon palate. Slightly bitter finish.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Guy de Chassey Champagne Grand Cru Carte Noire Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
91 points
Straw colour. Little nose - hint of dough/bread. Palate has a lovely lemony crispness and a decent finish. Starts subdued but finishes with a flourish.

Flight 4 - Last night (4 notes)

The Claude Michez won the battle on the last night but was then upstaged by a lovely Figeac (even though the vintage wasn't recommended)

White - Sparkling
2004 Claude Michez Champagne Cuvée Flore Brut Millesime France, Champagne
92 points
Light yellow colour with a hint of green. Lemons, yeast and some flowers on the nose. Lovely fine mousse. Palate is slightly puckering but well balanced, hints of roasted lemon some breadiness. Decent finish.
White - Sparkling
2003 Champagne Chapuy Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
A light yellow/ green colour. Nose is a little dried out. Fine, sharp mousse. Palate is a little hollow to start but fills out as it goes. Perhaps a little past its best
Red
1994 Château Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Colour showing age with good bricking although still deep. Nose shows some leather, dried tea. Palate has a freshness from the acidity although is a little dry but has a wonderful finish. Fantastic wine drinking beautifully now.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Château Coutet Barsac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
93 points
Marmalade nose with hints of candied orange. Palate is still young with a little woodiness and good acidity. Also has a decent finish.

Flight 5 - Last two bottles back in the UK (3 notes)

The Dauby pipped the Waris Larmandier but both lovely wines as were most of them.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Dauby Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Noirs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
Light golden colour, yeasty, doughie nose. Lovely small lively mousse. Fresh crisp palate, some lemon but wi a underlying honey notes for balance.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Waris-Larmandier Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
Very light straw colour with hint of green. Hint of lemon on the nose, medium mousse. Mousse dominates the fore-palate, bright and fresh. Hints of lemon and nuts on palate. Good finish.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Lamiable Champagne Grand Cru Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
No notes taken - whoops!

Closing

Excellent value and a couple of stand out wines. A tasting to be repeated! Wine of the tasting would probably be the Baron Dauverrgen and at €18 a bottle excellent value.
