Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2003 Sine Qua Non Sublime Isolation USA, California

Extremely heavy bottle with a beautiful label. Medium to dark straw, still looking quite fresh given the age. Restrained nose with attractive aromas of honeysuckle, ripe peach and tropical scents. Full-bodied with huge fruit concentration, a creamy texture and a beautiful acidic lift offering balance. Endless but excessively warm aftertaste (alcohol on the label is 15.7%!). This noticeable burn from the alcohol is this wine's only drawback. Otherwise a memorable drinking experience just as I was expecting based on my limited history with SQN wines.
White
2008 Hatzidakis Winery Assyrtiko Pyrgos Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
Very dark orange-bronze. Obvious oxidation on the nose with bretty funk and -maybe- cork taint. Full-bodied and dense with noticeable tannins, acidity to balance the high alcohol (15% on the label but probably more) and a long aftertaste. A case study of how a wine tastes when more than one defects exist simultaneously! No score.
White
2006 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
97 points
Wow! Definitely one of the greatest whites I have ever come across. Explosive nose of tropical fruits like mango, pineapple and passionfruit alongside floral notes of magnolia and minerality. On the palate it is full-bodied and dense with noticeable sweetness, high fruit concentration and balancing acidity. Powerful and dense without being heavy by any means. Very long aftertaste. Still quite young, will drink nicely for the next decade. Flirting with perfection.
White - Off-dry
2004 Reichsrat Von Buhl Forster Stift Rieslaner Auslese Germany, Pfalz
84 points
A German auslese (even if not a riesling) from a top producer is a wine that rarely disappoints, but this was an exception. The wine was tired, obviously past its best and starting to show signs of oxidation. Maybe an off-bottle?
White
2007 Château Carbonnieux Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
87 points
Medium straw. Mango, greenness and buttery scents on the nose. Medium-bodied with somewhat stewed fruit and high acidity. Shows signs of tiredness but still drinking quite well.
White
2011 Tetramythos Sauvignon Blanc Milia Greece, Peloponnisos, Achaia
89 points
From a vineyard at 1000 meters height. Light lemon green color with green hues. Pronounced cat pee, green figs, citrus fruit and herbs. Nicely integrated oak. Medium-bodied with freshness and crispy acidity. Good length. Probably at peak but will drink nicely for a couple of years or even longer.
