Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
2006 Louis Roederer Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
nose: sweet, lightly green
palate: super dry, sucks the sugar right from the tongue, this took the word "tart" to another level. Lots of mineral on the finish. Not my favorite style, but definitely had punch.
White - Sparkling
2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne
nose: after the Roederer 2006, this was super shy and soft in aroma. I got faint peach, but it was really not very aromatic in general.
palate: I found this lean for a typical Bollinger, but I think something more magical lies in wait. Some chalk was evident, but the wine was hard to evaluate behind whatever stone wall it is hiding right now. I'm disappointed I wasn't able to make a more complete evaluation in the setting.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Pol Roger Champagne Pure Brut France, Champagne
nose: very classy, with fun fruit and some faint almond
palate: very dry, but with strong fruit presence, it still managed a light and airy sense on the tongue. Interesting stuff, but probably not something I would purchase.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
nose: closed for business
palate: nothing like I expected, this was very lemon-limey, with intense citrus, but barely an evidence of the oaky richness I always taste in Vilmart. While it did have heft, the citrus was practically overpowering. Not sure of the base vintages, but this was disgorged in 2012. Perhaps just too new.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé Reserve France, Champagne
nose: nutty, smoky, cranberry. Complex, different, and a bit earthy. I found this earth-shattering in comparison to all the wines I'd tasted prior.

palate: less exciting than the nose suggested, this was still good. Faint tannin complemented an earthy, almost muddy taste, which was not at all disagreeable, amazingly. It tasted very "FrencH" say my notes. I recall it being different and proud of it, and probably not for everyone's taste. In the end, the nose was WOW! and the palate was Pretty Cool.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Bollinger Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
full of body, the tart raspberry was prominent. I found the palate to be very traditional, almost boring in style. Bolly rose never does it for me, esp for the price.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Ruinart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
nose: steely, but ripe
palate: mineral, chalk, more mineral....this had a long, long finish, with solid presence. Not really my style, but very well made.
Rosé - Sparkling
2004 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage France, Champagne
nose: sweet raspberry
palate: quite rich in flavor/intensity, but light in character - hard to pull of, but it did. Not sweet or cloying on the palate - well balanced. Nicely done.
Rosé - Sparkling
2004 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
nose: strawberry and sweet cream
palate: tannin is slick, almost unctuous, yet in the end the wine is more delicious than cloying. Of all the PR line I tasted tonight (regular, Pure, Winston) this was my favorite. Which isn't saying much - I wasn't particularly impressed with their lineup as a whole.
White - Sparkling
2002 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
nose: frankly boring. Typical, nothing stood out
palate: again, very typical in character, this had good body, but lacked much in the way of defining characteristics or even exciting flavor. boring.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Chaput Champagne Tradition Brut France, Champagne
sweet, but pleasant, I thought the aromas a little on the fakey-sweet side, but the palate was pleasing.
