Introduction
What a dinner….9 classic wines .
The food was spectacular as well. We started with a Chantrelle Tart, moved onto Eversprings Farm Duck and Pistachio Galantine, then to a tasting of wild boar, followed by slow roasted Roe Deer, then a flight of Comte (6,18 and 24month) and finished with Chocolate "Michel Cluizel"
Stunning night…we even rented a stretched limo :)
Flight 1 (15 notes)
Aromas of roasted nuts, candied lemon, minerals, mint and caramel dominate. The palate shows bright apple, pear, citrus, marzipan and burnt brûlée.
The finish is medium+ in length with candied citrus, ginger, minerals and mint. This is very pretty and in a great place right now
The nose is a bit maderized with notes of orange and roasted nuts augmenting the subtle sherried notes. The palate is quite complex but again definitely on the downward spiral with caramel, coffee, roasted nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and a touch of rancho. The finish is medium in length but a touch singular. Drink up if you have this
Immense length….3 minutes later I am still tasting this wine. Waves of flavour. Intense, Long, Complex. Reference point sauternes. WOW.
Cherry, truffle, bitter chocolate, spice, with a subtle touch of pyrazene. The palate is so elegant…the fruit so fresh with great balancing acid. Flavours of leather, earth, cherry, spice, cedar and asian 5 star spice. The finish is very long and so focused with no edges. This is almost burgundian in its weight, complexity and agility. Amazing wine.
Raspberry, soy, beef carpaccio, black tea, salty beef jus dominate the nose with cherry, raspberry, beef blood, flowers, and chocolate on the palate. This is so lush, yet so focused. The finish is monumental….so long with waves of pure cherry, earth, chocolate, beef, flowers and soy coming in and out in waves. Profound wine.
The nose shows cranberry, crunchy tart red fruit, minerals, smoke and herbs and transitions to similar flavours on the palate that give it an almost burgundian feel. There is great balancing acid which make this quite nice to drink. The finish is medium+ in length with good complexity.
Such a pretty nose……minerals, campfire, cherry, spice…such Graves typicity. The palate is so explosive, yet refined and compact with flavours of leather, cedar, cherry, smoke, earth, pencil lead. This is so svelte and right in its drinking window..it will hold obviously but why wait.
Finish is so long with great balance and such complexity. This is unreal….such pedigree.
Nose is utterly perfect….smoke, creosote, black currants, minerals, flint, and more minerals….Stunning 100pt nose. The palate has such purity, so complex with layers of flavours. Way too many to even note…dominated by black currants, minerals, spice, smoke, brown sugar, creosote, and dark cherry…I'm speechless. The finish is never ending. So much going on yet such purity and focus. Reference point wine.
The nose showed lush blackcurrants, smoke, flowers, minerals and a subtle medicinal note. The palate was a touch tight but showed pure fruit and oozed class…..blackfruit, spice, earth, leather and cedar all transitioned to a very long and complex finish.
This nose is stunning….violets, star anise, graphite, pyrazene…such pure fruit and so floral. The palate is so svelte…..pure, powerful and feminine with violets, dark fruit, minerals, cedar, leather….wow. Such insane length on the finish. Up there with the 1983 Palmer.
It was a touch muted on the nose with pyrazene and graphite and some dark fruit. The palate showed a bit more with currants and cherry but it was still simple and transitioned to a medium finish at best.
Closing
As the 1982s start to decline, 1989 is poised to become "the" vintage to drink. Such great fruit and acid balance with great secondary characteristics. These are wines that will continue to appreciate so buy what you can :)
