Holiday Chardonnay Tasting & Dinner

A Christmas tasting of chardonnay was scheduled around a delectable meal of spot prawns, smoked salmon, mussels and clams over fresh linguine and a tomato and Gorgonzola cream sauce. We started the night with an NV Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut. I did not leave a note because the initial tasting was strange and the sparkler was trying to shed some bottle funk. By the time some it's great flavors emerged and the bottle funk eroded I had consumed a bit too much to offer a fair score. The same goes for the 2010 Kistler Vine Hill Chardonnay. My wife arrived late from work so when we reheated her plate we had to open something great for her. It was showing beautifully with a seductive blend of apple, citrus and that buttery Kistler style. Unfortunately, I was beyond the point of no return and furthered solidified the adage that the path to wisdom is NOT in excess.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

2000 Williams Selyem Chardonnay Allen Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Very thick and unctuous with lots of syrupy butterscotch and some floral notes still present. Very smooth and refreshing for a 13 year old chardonnay. This is the quintessential Parkerized booze bomb coming in at 16% alcohol.
Purchased from a library sale directly from the winery a few months prior to tasting. Meaning it was stored in pristine conditions and may not reflect other bottles.
2011 Hirsch Vineyards Chardonnay USA, California, Sonoma County, Fort Ross - Seaview

Crisp and enjoyable chardonnay that clearly shows that Hirsch's winemaking has caught up to its farming. Decanted for approx. 90 minutes prior to consumption. Beautiful floral notes, lemon zest and asian pear. Shows great balance and just the perfect amount of acidity. So enjoyable. I have no clue how I am going to be able to keep my hands off the last bottle I have.
2007 Ridge Chardonnay Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Refreshing and enjoyable chardonnay. Some floral notes, honey and citrus are also present. A bit more oak then I previously remember. Very enjoyable.
