Flight 1 - Old World Reds (4 notes)

Red
2001 Fattoria La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
Aromatic, dense and classy - drinking very well and evolves nicely in the glass to give a varied and complex drinking experience. Cherries and strawberries predominate the nose and palate with sophisticated notes of tobacco looming behind it.
Red
2001 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
88 points
Unlike the La Gerla, this seemed to be shut down or possibly over the hill - drank tired over the course of several hours and the bottle was not finished off (although on day 2, we observed improvement, so maybe it's too early). Notes of violet and dried cherry.

Red
2004 Luigi Pira Barolo Margheria Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
This is another one, like the Fuligni, which seemed to be closed, although I'd guess it's not quite ready. At present, it's more in the cedar, menthol, tobacco & leather end of the spectrum, with no hints of the savory cherry flavors I seek.
Red
2006 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
91 points
Elegant, but dense, chewy and textured. Flavors and aromas of currant, spice & minerals. Good evolution in the bottle, bordering on rustic at times. Well liked by folks who normally drink Cali pinots - the density gave it class that they weren't used to seeing.

Flight 2 - New World Reds (2 notes)

Red
2007 Mitolo Shiraz Savitar Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
93 points
Ripe and plush with notes of black cherry and spice cake. Delicious and a crowd pleaser - but not overly sophisticated - maintains its balance, but lands firmly in the high-octane purple juice category.

Red
2007 Gramercy Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
92 points
Polished and textured with juicy currants, plum and lavender. Refined tannins and smooth long finish. A clear step up from some $20-$30 Napa cabs that we sipped earlier in the day.

Flight 3 - A Pair of Blancs (2 notes)

White
2011 Pio Cesare Gavi Italy, Piedmont, Gavi
90 points
Flavorful and smooth, but perhaps not as complex as other Gavis I've enjoyed. Apple and almond paste on the nose and palate with grapefruit notes on the finish.
White
1999 Château du Coing de Saint Fiacre Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Comte de St. Hubert France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine
95 points
I'll award this bottle WOTN status, although I think the shiraz and brunello were drained faster ... incredibly complex and surprisingly full-bodied for a muscadet. Showed a creamy palate with lemon curd and creme fraiche notes, a lemon-lime nose, and a waxy, slightly bitter finish.
