Tasted double blind when open for one hour. Black fruit, very firm and backward with modest spice. Two hours later this was longer and richer, just faintly starting to provide pleasure. 90 points at first, 92 later in the day.

1980 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Tasted double blind. Lots of very large scaled, juicy black fruit, but with too much structure. While I'm not concerned that fruit will fade any time soon, I don't see this transforming into a harmoniously integrated wine any time soon either.
Red
1990 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Served double blind to the tasting group alongside Gruaud Larose 1979. Wintergreen and eucalyptus came across more than anything else. Modest mature fruit. Les interesting than other fairly recent bottles of this same wine.
Red
1979 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Served double blind to the tasting group alongside Groth 1990 Cabernet Reserve from Napa. Mature black cherry aromas and flavors with modest spice. Very good balance, textures. Easy for most tasters to identify as Bordeaux, but most thought from a younger, better vintage.
Red
2001 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Tasted double blind. Black, fleshy fruit with firm tannic structure that was somewhat unwelcoming today. Lots of power matched with lots of tannins. Needs lots of time. Probably not a Bordeaux for me.
Red
2001 Schweiger Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
Tasted double blind. Backward, tough, slightly coarse. Others liked this to some degree, I din't find it very interesting. Was told another recent bottle was much better.
Red
1997 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
flawed
Corked.
Red
2001 Clos Mogador Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
93 points
Tasted double blind. Incredible spice with dense, dark, chewy fruit. Seemed CDP to me. Great spice start-to-finish. Huge and clearly very high on the "yummy" scale for good wine, perhaps less high on the "interesting" scale for me.

Red
1959 Cantina Terre Del Barolo Barolo Riserva Speciale Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Tasted double blind. This came across as more interesting and typical than another bottle from the same source a year ago. Rose petal and earth with good textures and charm. Lingering fruit snuck through for fleeting seconds.
Red
2007 Spring Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
flawed
Tasted double blind. An off bottle in some bizarre, unfriendly way.
Red
1994 Bernardus Winery Marinus USA, California, Central Coast, Carmel Valley
85 points
Tasted double blind. Very interesting aromatic start with good spice well balanced with mature black fruit. Far less interesting flavors. Very short, very simple. 87-88 point nose. 82-83 point palate.
Red
1998 Domaine Trapet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Decanted in advance, but not for nearly long enough. Great black fruit aromas with substantial, meaty spice. Long and powerful, but still too firm and backward today. Fruit isn't going anywhere, so great potential remains, it's just challenging to know when.
