Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
2008 Forey Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasting. Dark fruit with just faint spice hints on either nose or palate. Good, slightly backward, somewhat simple.
Red
2008 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
90 points
Tasted twice today. First from a bottle open several days prior, gassed and refrigerated since. All red fruit, leaner styled. Bright red cherry flavors, very well textured. Elegant. Long for its level. 90 points.

Second bottle was served blind. Popped and decanted, this showed so much sulfur that we poured it into glasses and waiting ~1 hour. Sulfur mostly dissipated aromatically, but left a lingering flavor. Similar red fruit, similarly lacy like the earlier bottle, just odd.
Red
2007 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting. Open several days prior, then gassed and refrigerated. I did not enjoy this wine. Perhaps it didn't store well, but had a character of decay. I have little experience with Chevillon 2007s, so just hope/think this is not representative.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting. Open severald ays earlier, then gassed and refrigerated. This is a wine I like in mnay vintages and 2005 is no exception. Big and bold, perhaps easily showing Volnay charm right now, but lots of good background soice with large scales, robust fruit.
Red
2005 Domaine Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Tasting. Open several days earlier, then gassed and refrigerated. This probably benefited from having been opened days before. Meaty, black and very dense with good power. Lots of tannins, but on the elegant side. Very good for its level.
Red
1998 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
Tasted double blind. Easily recognized as Chateauneuf, also accurately assesses as 1998 given its ripeness and advanced level of maturity. Very good fruit, just seemingly short on tannins and acid, so enjoyable combination of fruit and earth, but time to drink up.
Red
2000 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
90 points
Served double blind to tasting group. Red and black fruit aromas and flavors with modest spice, not easily recognizable as Vosne/ Echezeaux. Good balance of earthy elements and fruit. I popped, decanted and poured 30 minutes later. Wine was better several hours later.
Red
2001 Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
91 points
Tasted double blind. Mostly black fruit aromas, meaty, dense on plate with good minerality and textures, modest spice. Still very firm, this needs more cellar time.
Red
1984 Girard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Tasted double blind. Correctly assessed his as New World Cabernet. Black fruit with some nice mushroom elements and a bit of tobacco. Better flavors than slightly flat aromas. Good balance and life. Much better than a Girard 1984 Reserve from magnum tried last year.
Red
2010 Domaine Bruno Clair Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
Tasted double blind. Easily identifiable as Burgundy. Lots of red fruit, modest spice aromas. Fresh red cherry and raspberry flavors with good concentration. Delicious no, but the substance to age well. Decanted several hours before serving.
Red
2002 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Tasted double blind. Good black fruit with nice touch of liqueur aromas. Lots of everything in good balance. Still very young, but lots of pleasure already.
Red
2011 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Opulent and slightly sweet. Ultra ripe and fat, this isn't exactly my preferred style of Chateauneuf.
