Introduction

A tutored tasting with Jasper Morris, a treat of an Xmas present to ourselves.

Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
2011 Patrice Rion Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Dark cherry fruit on the nose and on the palate, good weight, acidity and length, needs 15 years+

2009 Olivier Bernstein Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Deep purple in colour, plenty of toasted wood on the nose from the 100% new barrels, some whole bunches in is wine. Quite big in style, quite earthy flavours, good length, not really my style of wine, it's just too big in every way.
Red
2008 Benjamin Leroux Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
89 points
Quite perfumed, even floral nose, quite smooth at this early stage, fine tannin, not really very open now unsurprisingly, acidity quite strong, more to come here but not showing particularly well tonight
Red
2007 Domaine de la Vougeraie Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
91 points
Opened and poured for about 1.5 hours. 70% new oak! some of the vines are 90 years old. Some lightening around the edges showing already, a slightly smokey nose with some good fruit, some meatiness and quite mouthfilling, good length, pretty much ready, really rather good.

2005 Domaine de la Vougeraie Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Opened and poured for 1.5 hours. This is still very young, purple and opaque, there's some decent fruit if you can coax it out, strong legs, rich and full flavoured, great length and plenty of fine tannin, this will probably be great when it grows up, but that's a way away yet.
Red
2000 Domaine de la Vougeraie Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
88 points
Quite dark and full bodied, opaque even with some fading brown around the edges. Very soft and smooth, but lacking some acidity for me, there's a fair amount of flavour but it's not very well defined, decent length.
Red
2007 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
91 points
Opened for 1.5 hours. Made from all red soil BM around 30% new oak. Medium body, lots of lovely fruit on the nose it's all very primary still, good length, balanced and delicious
Red
2002 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

From magnum, again opened and poured for 1.5 hours. This has more concentration than the 07 and is much fuller and deeper colour. A very perfumed nose with violets and cherries is just lovely. Lots of ripe mouthfilling fruit but it's in no way jammy, there's great clarity and definition of flavour, even something like salinity here, whatever is, this is really lovely and has a good future ahead
Red
1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
89 points
facial dense colour, the nose seems quite closed, there's a fair amount of tannin showing still and maybe a little brett although it's quite long, this doesn't seem like it's totally firing tonight
Red
1996 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
91 points
Bricking at the edge, quite full, a lovely mature burgundy nose, good acidity, fruit and flavour and decent length, maybe lacking a little definition in the middle but I quite liked this without it being a great wine.
Red
2000 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
89 points
Slight browning at the edges, fairly dense in colour, nose is fairly closed, it's quite tasty but no great length or complexity, expected more from this wine
Red
1990 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
95 points
Significant browning eating into this wine now. This is fully mature and ready to go, there's a lot going on on the nose, a bit of smoke, some meatiness wafts of dark cherry fruit, it coats the inside of your mouth and has plenty of complex fruit and secondary flavours intertwined and is very long. This was most impressive.
