Dinner at Trelio
Clovis Ca.
Tasted March 1, 2014 by Mrbuzz with 613 views
Introduction
6 of us gathered for some fine food and even finer wine in Clovis Ca. at Trelio. Lot of first time wines here for most of us…..all(except maybe the 07 Rayas) showed really really well….and were paired with some tasty food and exceptional service at Trelio! Good times had by all!!!
Flight 1 (12 notes)
Rosé - Sparkling
1985 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Rare
92 points
Still kickin with fresh strawberry, raspberry fruit…slight ox with the age, but it really went nicely with the fruit and teeny tiny bubbles…..even stayed fresh throughout the eve. Loved the rose petals, dried cherry, minerality.

2000 Château Haut-Brion Blanc

First time with this….intriguing nose of some kind of petrolish chalk, limestone, lemon citrus…..wonderful softness, lanolin….and fresh as can be with crushed minerals, citrus squeeze….just beautiful chalk, dough, and lime blossoms to go along with that exotic nuance…..savory….I went back to this one many times…loved it!
White
2009 Marcassin Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard
94 points
More toned down than previous ones…but still has a nice richness of butterscotch, honeysuckle, exotic white honey, lemon butter…...faint match strike…..but what really makes it wonderful is the tight acidity and chalk dust…keeps it fresh to the rich fruit. Should only gain with age.
White
2012 Liquid Farm Chardonnay White Hill
91 points
Very clean and fresh…pure white orchard fruit, raw peanut, rain water, white flowers….alive with citrus acidity, some minerals. Tasty…but would rather drink Chablis.
Red
2006 Marcassin Pinot Noir Blue-Slide Ridge Vineyard
92 points
Had along with the 06 Marcassin…this was darker and deeper…not as open or pretty….but still good rich dark fruits, dusty spices, forest floor earth….needs some time to really show.

Loved this! Savory candied strawberry, raspberry, cherry fruit….with this wonderful dusty/spicy earth tone to it…as well as great structured minerality and pretty pretty florals. Well balanced, no heat…..Lot of tastiness here!!

2005 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve

Flat out gorgeous! Had along side the 07(which it crushed)….amazing white pepper spice, leather, tobacco wrapper…sweet red fruits with great acidity…somewhat med bodied, yet did gain with air…..so pretty with dusty spices and that white pepper. A beauty!

2007 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve

Had along with the 05….which just killed this. Don't know what happened here…..very primary, candied raspberry, cherry fruit…with tons of high toned blood orange citrus (VA?) that really detracted. Lighter bodied than the 05…just a faint leather and white pepper spice….it did get slightly better as the night went on…but still…that acid?

1989 Château Haut-Brion

The legend…..and it delivered! Decanted for 4hrs?….pure blackberry, currant, perfectly ripe fruit…yet not as intense as I've heard about….still tons of fresh acidity and dusty tannins…so so silky smooth it just oozes over the palate. Wonderful Bordeaux flavors of cigar ash, licorice, graphite, aged leather….all working so well together. Went back to this one many times also….a true joy to drink!
Red
1989 Château Angélus
96 points
Had along with the 89 Haut Brion…and it almost bested it! Pnp….still has huge structure with juicy tannins, dark rich blackberry fruit, creme de cassis, nutty leather, olive, cedar spice box…..darker than the HB….smooth and silky…just gorgeous…with tons of years ahead! Gave the nod to the HB because it had just a little bit more complexity and a better feel. Both wines deserving of legend. 50/50 Cab/Merlot I believe.

1998 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT

Opened in bottle for 9+hrs….massive beast! Dark and inky liqueured berry fruit that's smoooooth as silk! Killer wood spice, licorice, creme de cassis, coffee bean, chewy tannins….long savory dusty finish! Will age forever... LOVE this!
Red - Fortified
2011 Dow Porto Vintage
95 points
Intense wild liqueured berry fruit…smooth and sweet with good dryness. Dusty white pepper, licorice, graphite powder, purple florals galor! Smooth with layers of complexity….not as amazing as the 07….but still a super sipper here!
