A visit to Kamen

Sonoma Square

Introduction

I stopped by the Kamen Tasting room earlier this week. Marisol R. was pouring four wines. It is always nice when the attendant is both friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines. I hadn't had any of these wines for some time. Years ago, I helped pour for Tim Spear at an Ohio trade show and met Robert Kamen, but it had been a while. I remember the wines as being good, especially for the money. That is still true, but these wines were certainly up a notch or two from what I remember.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Tasted at the tasting room. The CT scores on this are thru the roof. I can't say I agree but it is a nice wine. Pretty nose of tropical fruit with slight grassy notes. Very ripe. On the palate, slightly crisp. Tropical fruits. Slight heat on the long finish.

Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cassis, iodine, and a strong graphite component. Also some charred oak. Really nice on the palate. Cassis, a nice complexity, with layers of graphite, earth and fruit. Well balanced. Ripe, but not a bomb or over the top. Nice finish. Outstanding Cab.
Red
2010 Kamen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Kashmir Cuvee USA, California, Sonoma County, Moon Mountain District

Purple in color, crimson at the rim. Like the regular Cab only more intense and deep. Pinpoint. Very smooth and complex with silky tannins. Cassis, blueberries, minerals, graphite. Long finish. Outstanding wine. Not cheap at $155 but its right up there with the best of Napa in that price range.

Another very nice wine. This has a warm nose with a dusty black raspberry quality. Easy to drink and quite smooth. Black and red raspberries with an underlayment of warm loam. Nice balance.
