Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong

Tasted November 17, 2006 by Wrighty with 633 views

Introduction

A semi blind collection of 1996 Bordeaux with a couple of '97 Napa Cabs thrown in for comparison. A good selection of wines and a very enjoyable evening.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut France, Champagne
86 points
Light and a little flat. Medium mousse but nothing much happening.

Flight 2 - Mushroom and white truffle soup (3 notes)

The two Marguax were a little light and disappointing. The Cakebread had more complexity and was drinking better but think it's time to drink up.

Red
1996 Château d'Issan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
88 points
Earthy brambles, flat palate, light.
Red
1996 Château Brane-Cantenac France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
87 points
Red
1997 Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Some euycalyptus and cherry.

Flight 3 - Rack of lamb provencal (3 notes)

A better flight of wines as hoped. The Stag's Leap stood out as new world but not necessarily from the US. The Montrose has promise.

Red
1996 Château Talbot France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Damp earth and some cedar. Muscular and a little tight
Red
1996 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
93 points
Complex and balanced. Evolved over the evening.
Red
2001 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fay USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Seemed a little volatile. Mint and euycalyptus

Flight 4 - Cheese (1 note)

While the Port isn't a great wine it's the second time I've tried it and both times it's a good example of drinkable Port.

Red - Fortified
1987 Warre Porto Vintage Quinta da Cavadinha Portugal, Douro, Porto
89 points
Drinking very well. Alcohol was integrated and the wine balanced

Closing

The US wins again. The SLV had 3 WOTN, Montrose 2 WOTN (inlcuding mine) and the Cakebread 1WOTN. Seems to be a trend for Claifornia to beat Bordeaux! I also left my notes behind so apologies for the poor brief notes but will try to rescue them.
