Ardsley, New York

Introduction

Ned's attempt to match quality Italian food with quality diverse Italian wines. Mission Accomplished!
Note there were more wines opened than are recorded here, but either I neglected to take notes or didn't feel they deserved notation.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2011 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Bianco Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
90 points
Drank at WWS Italian Wine dinner. Never had this before, & I'm not a huge fan of Italian whites in general. Pale straw color, generous nose of fruit & flowers. Fairly full bodied wine with a nice round mouth fell. Zesty acidity to go with the copious amount of fruit--pears mostly, but also I picked up some almond or perhaps marzipan. Some minerality too. Interesting wine & quite enjoyable. Not what one usually finds, or expects in Italy. Nice job Ned!

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
2010 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
89 points
Drank at WWS Italian wine dinner (very dark so hard to see the color). Subdued nose, some red fruits there. Ripe fruit, a bit oaky. Nice minerality & acidity. More full bodied than expected. A nice chianti but needs time to mellow.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
88 points
Drank at WWS Italian wine dinner. Nose showed earth notes. Red fruit on palate, some leather here. Mostly 1-dimensional wine. Nothing special
Red
1998 Poderi Colla Barbaresco Roncaglie Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
91 points
Drank at WWS Italian wine dinner. Darkish red color showing some age. Generous nose of spice, red fruit and dust. Some fruit here, though diminishing. Mushrooms, leather, chalky tannins mostly resolved, not grippy. The wine has a dusty, chalky quality to it, which is predominant over its fruit. Interesting wine

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Bruna Grimaldi Barolo Camilla Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Drank at WWS Italian wine dinner. Generous flowery nose--mostly roses. Light rose color. Modern style barolo. Sweet red fruits dominate here. Soft tannins here, but faint. Good length and acidity. Some tar and tobacco elements. A nice-enough barolo, though very much on the light side. Drank side by side with a 2007 Brunello which, surprisingly, was far more weighty and concentrated.
Red
2007 La Lecciaia Di Pacini Mauro Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Drank at WWS Italian wine dinner. Very dark color, no signs of age. Nose of dark fruits, earth and tobacco. Fairly ripe blackberries, oak present, tannins, though soft, very much present. Modern-style BM, soft & somewhat elegant, and easy drink. A much bigger, darker, weightier wine than I expected.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
1997 Rovertondo Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
93 points
Drank at WWS Italian wine dinner. Dark, purplish color. Roasted peanuts on the nose. Modern style, raisins dominate here, bright racy fruit. Also chocolate, tar and espresso coffee beans. Very full bodied, some sweetness on the finish. A bit lacking in the mid palate, and not as elegant as I would have hoped. Still youthful, but in a very good place right now. Voted WOTN. Real crowd pleaser--I enjoyed it but as much as many at the table did.

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Tommaso Bussola Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Recioto della Valpolicella Classico
91 points
Final wine of our WWS Italian wine dinner. Nose of espresso, (some said organic glue too). Lovely dessert wine. Black grapes, raisins, plum, figs & chocolate. Very extracted, a bit hot, and not particularly long but overall a lovely finisher.
