Grappe, Stockholm

Introduction

A tasting of some Chardonnays from Domaine Labet, showed by Caviste. All wines were from the non-oxidised part (vins blancs ouillés) of Labet's range.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White
2012 Domaine Labet Chardonnay Fleur France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
88 points
Nose with yellow and green apples, a hint of peach, some perfume, almost no oak detectable. Medium body, palate with green apples, citrus (primarily lemon), noticeable acidity with some mineral, and an impression in the steely direction, very fresh aftertaste. Young and fresh, could develop, 88(+) p.
Cool climate Chardonnay style in style, with very well hidden oak.
White
2011 Domaine Labet Chardonnay Fleur France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
88 points
Nose with light-coloured fruit including white peaches, green and yellow apples, mineral, and a hint of developed notes with clay and almond. The palate is medium bodied with quite a bit of green apples, mineral, and high acidity. Still rather young, 88 p.
The 2011 shows less ripe fruit notes in the nose compared to the 2012. On the palate, it is more firm and Chablis-like. Overall, the 2011 gives a cooler impression.
White
2011 Domaine Labet Chardonnay Fleur France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
89 points
Nose with ripe yellow apples, a hint of honey, very discrete notes of maturity. It is a classical Chardonnay nose. The palate is medium bodied(+) with yellow apples, high acidity, mineral, and a hint of spice. Good body, a foody wine, could develop more, 89(+) p.
Comes rather close to a Chablis Premier Cru from some producer that uses a bit of oak and likes to make wines with a bit more than average body.
White
2010 Domaine Labet Chardonnay Les Varrons France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
89 points
Nose with ripe yellow apples together with some winter apples and hazelnuts, some citrus, as well as some perfume notes and elegance. Noticeably developed notes, not unlike a mature Chablis or a mature blanc de blancs Champagne. The palate is medium bodied(+) with green apples and some yellow apples, high acidity and mineral, as well as grapefruit that lingers in the aftertaste. The palate is younger than the nose, 89(+) p.
A discrete reminder of the oxidation notes found in more traditional Jura wines, but only in the nose. Considering that Jura wines can take much more oxidation than this and taking the level of acidity into account, this small oxidation note should not be a problem. I'd consider cellaring this wine for a while, in order to give it more roundness and spicy notes, but it is likely to develop slowly.
