Introduction

The only requirement was that the wine be from 1990. These were served single blind. We did not flight them according to region. Just a 1990 free for all.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
1990 Domaine Leroy Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Narbantons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
93 points
Consistent with the prior bottle. Excellent silky texture. Blind next to the 1990 Dujac Clos St Denis we couldn't tell the difference.
Red
1990 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
94 points
Another excellent bottle and it showed well in this lineup. Love the integrated and round mouthfeel.
Red
1990 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
This was surprisingly fresh. Nice mature fruit with a pretty sweet strawberry note on the nose and palate. Not very deep, but pretty and easy. Medium finish.
Red
1990 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
88 points
Drank over 3 hours. Something was up with this bottle. The nose was angular and funky. As if you had ripe red and black fruit covered in dust but not TCA. The palate was full of dark fruit, graphite and tobacco, but was not as smooth as prior bottles.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
1990 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
94 points
Detailed nose of mature red and blue fruit, spice and rose petals. Smooth and integrated palate. Nice finesse and great, but subtle spice mixed in with various mineral notes. Medium depth and finish. Excellent right now.
Red
1990 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
95 points
Drank over 3 hours. Brilliant showing for this wine. Bright red fruit, violets, rose petals and some earth on the nose and palate. Incredibly fresh and just danced over your tongue. Long finish. Great grip and energy.

Red
1990 Château Trotanoy France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
87 points
Drank over 3 hours. Dirty nose of earth, dark fruit and a hint of violet. Shallow red fruit on the palate. Disjointed. On the other end of the spectrum from the 90 Evangile we had next to it.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
1990 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Very similar to the bottle I had last year. Great bright red fruit on the nose. Excellent freshness, but this is still coiled. Love the ripeness and sleek texture. Will improve.

Red
1990 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Cadettes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Drank over 3 hours. A very enjoyable mature CdP. Nose of pretty red fruit, meat and herbs. More of the same on the palate. Bright and easy. Very Burgundian feel. Medium depth and finish.
Red
1990 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Lake USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
93 points
Surprisingly good and all of us mistook this for a Bordeaux. Mature nose of red fruit, oak and earth. Palate matched. Nice depth and smooth texture and finish. Great mature CA cab.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Very similar to the last bottle. Red fruit, meat, a bit of iodine and iron on the nose and palate. Great balance, texture and integration. Medium finish. Nice right now.
Red
1990 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
94 points
Very similar to my prior bottles, but this was overshadowed by the 90 Evangile.
Red
1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Mature and detailed nose of black fruit, earth, herbs and smoked meat. The palate matched and was fairly concentrated, but not holding much back. This will improve but is in a nice spot.
