Introduction

1998 Vintage - Right Bank vs Left Bank

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2008 Château Carbonnieux Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
80 points
In a very strange place. Was served a little cold, but just got heavy as it warmed up. Overwhelming citrus note. Had this wine a year ago and was much more youthful... The semillion is fighting with the sav blanc now and not in a good way.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
1998 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
94 points
Wine of the flight and My #3 WOTN. Not the best Palmer, but a very enjoyable "merlot" year Palmer.
Red
1998 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
91 points
Solid wine, more fruit driven than the Palmer served alongside. A little too young, tannins still dominating the finish... Lacking the depth I was hoping for.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
1998 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
88 points
New world style BDX that is strangely muted at this stage. dark flavors but nothing remarkable. Reminded me of a nice Cali cab that is slightly over the hill. Disappointing given the pedigree.
Red
1998 Château Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
WOTN for many, my #2 of the evening. Beautiful wine. Had good depth richness and depth. Tannins have integrated nicely, I would think this is right at or around it's peak now.
Red
1998 Château L'Arrosée France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Certainly the most polarizing wine of the night. The nose was strangely muted and on the palate it has an explosive dark fruit flavor on the front but quickly disappeared on the midpalate, with little to no finish. Seemed more like a Syrah. I enjoyed how different it was from everything else, but many others did not.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
1998 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
My WOTN. Equally as interesting and expressive on he nose as on the palate. Surprised how mature is tasted. Black fruits, cigar box, mellowed tannins and a slight black pepper note. Didn't love the cheese pairing, but who needs it with a wine like this in the glass.

Flight 5 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1998 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Drinking well. Distinctly suduiraut. Butterscotch, honey, and a floral note. Good depth and sweetness.
