Bistro de l'Hotel - Beaune

Tasted May 13, 2014 by Burgundy Al with 581 views

Introduction

Dinner with Frédéric Drouhin, Etienne de Montille, François Labet (Chateau de la Tour) and hosted by John Kapon. A good time was had by all.

Flight 1 (20 notes)

White
2011 Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Floral start with lots of fat apple and lemon hints to follow. Rounded and approachable with a firm, almost bitter hint at the very end, but good depth and energy.
White
2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
Precise, long and vibrant as always. Apple with lemon and lemon zest notes throughout. Long life here.
White
2007 Domaine Marius Delarche Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
90 points
Round, forward and fat with very pleasurable fruit, perhaps a bit too much pronounced new oak influence for me. Moderate intensity. I preferred the Martray '07 served alongside.
White
2006 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Dark color. Ripe stone fruit aromas with hints of sweetness and spice. More nuanced flavors immediately emerge with the same fruit but so well supported and chiseled by good acidity and minerality. Very good density, moderately good length.
White
2004 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
92 points
Direct from the Drouhin cellars a few blocks away, this was more fresh and charming vs another bottle from my cellar a few weeks ago. Perfect balance of freshness, energy and hints of maturation. Great now.
Red
1961 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Black tea and good spice to start, very intriguing. Faded quickly. I've never seen this wine before, but would imagine it was an assemblage of younger vine or declassified Echezeaux, Grands-Echezeaux and Brulees?
Red
1941 E&D Moingeon Freres Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Charming and still quite alive with spice and red fruit hints behind more prominent earthy character.
Red
1979 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
From magnum from the Domaine. Started quite musty, some thought corked, but then came across as earthy, then as clear and pleasurable after 15-20 minutes in glass. Still earthy but ripe red fruit aromas and flavor hints.
Red
1988 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
94 points
Huge sweet baking spice with mature black cherry. Very long and powerful with superbly elegant structure throughout. As impressive as prior bottles, no fear of this fading any time soon.
Red
1989 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
90 points
Mature red fruit, earth and subtle sweet spice. Moderate depth and intensity. Best now. Perhaps slightly lost in the quality of its flight (how often does that happen to a Meo-Camuzet Grand Cru?).
Red
1990 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
97 points
Probably the 3rd or 4th time I've had this wine and it's been a rock star every time. It has prob been 5 years since I've had it last and while moderately mature, it shows such great red and black cherry, perfectly accompanied by Asian five spice. Dense, powerful, well textured and nuanced. My WOTN, and also WOTN for at least half the others at dinner that I asked.
Red
1986 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
flawed
Corked.
Red
1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
92 points
Mature red fruit through with enticing spice, lots of earth, some faint hints of rot that Frederic Drouhin said are common in 1980s. Intriguing sweet notes also persisted that added charm. Nuanced and well textured, very interesting and good.
Red
2000 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
At a very good place right now with lots of mature fruit and subtle spice in the background. Everything here is resolved, integrated and good right now.
Red
1994 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
90 points
From magnum. Very pleasant and mature black fruit and gamy character. Seemed more advanced than I expected. Others liked this far more than I did tonight.
Red
1974 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
93 points
Only the 2nd time I've had this wine. First time it was corked and this 2nd wonderful bottle was opened in Beaune! Lots of black fruit, tobacco, spice. Very intense but with great overall balance, textures. Still fresh.
Red - Fortified
1963 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
94 points
Opened in honor of Etienne's birthday. Fruitcake flavors and spice. Mature, intense red cherry start-to-finish, really charming and fun.
Red
2012 Domaine de Montille Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
94 points
Not yet bottled, recently racked for bottling. Starts of ripe but incredibly elegant with powerful re berry aromas and flavors. Picks up weight and density as you are tasting the wine. Long, enticing finish. A masterful wine, with 94-96 point potential.
Red
2011 Domaine de Montille Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
91 points
Bottle had been open most of the day. Accessible and very forward with bright red and blue berries, good spice and fresh herbs. Very easily enjoyed and accessible tonight.
Red
2009 Domaine de Montille Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
93 points
This bottle had also been open 12 hours when I tasted it. Cross-section of great red fruit, accessible and great spice. Slightly floral hints. Very powerful and very persistent.
