Introduction

An Italian wine dinner with John Bigelow of North Berkely Imports and excellent food from Brasa.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Col Vetoraz Glera Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Valdobbiadene
87 points
This was the greeting bubbly:
Quite effervescent with lemon-lime and Granny Smith apples on the palate. Fairly light on the mid palate. Nicely crisp and fresh.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White
2003 Fattoria Laila Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Italy, Marche, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
84 points
Paired with: foie gras, truffled honey polenta, bing cherries & chocolate.
Very light nose of diesel & not much else. Lemon rind and a touch of rubber on the palate with a short metallic finish. Hollow on the mid palate. Reminds me of a weak Chateay Carbonnieux.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White
2003 Villa Carafa Fiano di Avellino Italy, Campania, Fiano di Avellino DOCG
87 points
Paired with: butternut squash cappelletti, sage, hazelnuts & reggiano.
This wine had a very faint nose of petrol. The palate was full, however I couldn't quite place the flavors. A nice pleasant wine with an extremely long finish.

Flight 4 (1 note)

I wouldn't have thought to pair a chianti with ahi tuna... nice!

Red
2001 Fattoria Le Fonti Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
Paired with: ahi tuna, roasted celeriac, gingered beet root, mache and meyer lemon.
Classic chianti nose. Extremely smooth with moderate tannins, slightly meaty with a light touch of black cherry. VERY smooth, very pleasant - incredible for a $15.00 Chianti.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
2001 Ronchi di Giancarlo Rocca Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
89 points
Paired with: squab, brown butter braised lentils, crispy sweet potatoes.
Hugely tannic this wine showed black cherry meat and earth. Pleasant. This is going to need a little time, 10-15 years?

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2001 Paternoster Aglianico del Vulture Rotondo Italy, Basilicata, Aglianico del Vulture
90 points
Paired with: a selection of white, mostly goat cheeses.
Sweet and pleasant on the palate, I had trouble finding the nose of this wine. Very dark, with black fruits and the right amount of sweetness this was extremely well balanced. The finish was average. This is drinking well now and perhaps will be better in a couple of years with a long life beyond that.
