Introduction

All wines served blind

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Thick lacquered nose of candied cherry and earthy tones. Very broad on the attack, flavors are consistent with the nose, very concentrated and rich. The mid palate and finish are bogged down by tannins right now.

Very good - Hold 2020+??

Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Very pretty nose, crunchy red fruit with a spearmint/ leafy streak that emerges from the middle of the fruit. Tannins are powdery and this shows purer fruit on the palate than the Montestefano. My WOTN / Group WOTN.

Very good.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
The nose shows clear red fruit; sour cherry, kirsch. Similar nose to the Montestefano but less earthy. This showed some heat and a touch of alcohol on the finish and is currently very tannic.
Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pajè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Interesting nose shows lush red fruit but is complemented by a loamy / mushroomy backside. As with the other wines in this lineup, the tannins are very prominent at this stage, though less so than some others sampled. The palate was much cooler than the Pora this was tasted next to.

Very Good

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Very floral nose that shows darker fruit than its peers. Palate shows lush dark fruit and is relatively approachable. The finish, however, is very tannic and giving away little enjoyment.
Red
2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Of all the wines tasted, this was the most tannic. The nose is attractively perfumed and dark however the body is not approachable, nor will it be for a while.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2008 Silvio Grasso Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Full nose of red fruit, black fruit and currant with a pleasant herbal streak running through the middle and a slight funkiness. Tannins are firm but not overbearing. The mid-palate is lacking some body. Very dry finish.

Good.
Red
2009 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Acclivi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Fruity nose and attack. Very warm on the palate with focused fruit. Medium to short finish.

Good

Closing

Overall none of the wines showed particularly well as they were clearly closed down, which made it difficult to discern the non-primary notes and flavors. It is clear that the Produttori Riservas have a lot of stuffing and will evolve into great wines after a lengthy sleep.

For all of their individual intricacies, the sweetness of the fruit a this stage (kirsch-like) really surprised some of the participants, myself included.
