Flight 1 (1 note)

Red
2010 Mocali Morellino di Scansano Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Morellino di Scansano
88 points
Double decanted for sediment. Really has come together in the past year. Apricot and white flowers on the nose nose. The palate adds Tuscan herbs, red/black cherry skin, nice acidity, with a clean mouthfeel. On the lighter side of medium-bodied; nice and refreshing. Drink now.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Craggy Range Te Kahu Gimblett Gravels Vineyard New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels
88 points
Decanted 30 minutes. This wine keeps softening as it ages, but I'm not sure it has added any complexity. The grape notes have evolved into more usual mixed berry and plum. It has a nice earthy/herbal tone to the midpalate and a clean, refined finish.

Decanted 30 minutes. A bit better than the 2009, this has a touch more flavor and sweetness to the fruit, more vibrant, partially due to it being a year younger. Ripe plum, blueberry, mixed currants, violets, medium weight palate, finishes soft and elegant.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Celler de Capçanes Montsant Mas Donís Barrica (Old Vines) Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant
87 points
Not decanted. More austere compared to the 2010, tangy, spicy, and rather tannic mid- and late-palate. Sticky blackberry, asphalt, incense, and sappy herbal aspects on the finish.

Not decanted. Sweeter and prettier than the 2009. Not as spicy, but more floral and better fruit purity, nice black plum, blackerry, and some licorice and incense.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2006 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna Australia, South Australia
92 points
Decanted 3 hours. Masculine, meaty wine with intense blackberry, black plum, smoke, and black licorice. Some of the oak has integrated since 2012; time is starting to iron this out into a big, balanced Shiraz. This is a big wine, but not overripe. For that reason, I'd say this will end up more like the 1996 than the 1998 (both drank a couple weeks ago), becoming increasingly elegant over the next 10 years. This 2006 was much better than the 2009 that was tasted alongside.

Decanted 2 hours. Alongside the superior 2006, this was more subtle and feminine. It has dark fruit, though more purple and not quite the black fruit of the 2006. It's also not as full-bodied, but does have more floral character and wild mountain berry flavors, and there's less weight and concentration to the mouthfeel. Still needs a few years to flesh out.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
2004 Durigutti Malbec Familia Argentina, Mendoza
92 points
Not decanted, but really picked up weight with more air. Loamy raspberry, roasted cherry and tomato, pipe tobacco, old leather nose. Palate sweet dark fruit, black raspberry, cherry liqueur, crushed rocks, and soft white/red pepper spice edging the finish. Lovely mature Malbec with some interesting subtleties. Drink now-2015.
