Tasted June 7, 2014 by Gargantua with 1,418 views
Flight 1 (101 notes)
Red
2012 René Bouvier Gevrey-Chambertin Jeunes-Rois
Nose of beautiful green skunkiness, palate is acidic then sweet, then bitter; hmm; disjointed for the time being? A boatload of initial promise. 20% stems.
Red
Red
2012 René Bouvier Charmes-Chambertin
An alluring skunky nose that reminds me of my favorite Pinot Noirs, in particular Enderle and Moll. WOW. Light and watery but fabulous; grand cru depth without weight here, fabulous!
White
2013 René Bouvier Marsannay Le Clos Blanc
Monopole. I'd've bet the farm that it was Pinot Blanc inflected, but apparently no, says Bernard. Peanutty nose; minerality proper to PB to my mind.
Red
Red
2011 Pierre Damoy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Tamisot
Nose is a rusty green; palate is supple and lovely if sparse
Red
2011 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin
Watery? Dense behind this thin attack--disjoint grand cru at this early stage. Sweet but thin. Hope it comes together.
Red
2011 Pierre Damoy Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
15ha total, varied argilo-calcaire. Slight cedar, alluring tannic cherry jam. Will be elegant--glass residuals are amazing!
Red
2012 Geantet-Pansiot Marsannay Les Champs Perdrix
Slight skunky character; tannins; biting but charming, not limestone as I'd've guessed--this is clay.
Red
2011 Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin
Sweet Pinot Noir nose--charmer! Palate shows green cedar, sweet PN fruit, a bit austere mineral/clay-wise amid sweetness--hollow midpalate for now.
Red
2011 Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin En Pallud
Bertrand's last vintage before the domaine was sold to Morey Tawse and Mark Fincham took over. Palate thankfully shows no green but is thin and watery a bit. So sad crummy 2011 had to be his last vintage...
Red
2011 Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques
Bertrand's last vintage before the domaine was sold to Morey Tawse and Mark Fincham took over. Palate is acidic, but with a supple texture; acid roses, tart cherry.
Red
2011 Domaine Maume Charmes-Chambertin
Bertrand's last vintage before the domaine was sold to Morey Tawse and Mark Fincham took over. Nose closed tight; palate thin for now, acid but supple dark fruit.
Red
2011 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin
Bertrand's last vintage before the domaine was sold to Morey Tawse and Mark Fincham took over. This was nice but I was rushed and had little time for notes. By this point of the tasting, they were packing up, and I was fighting to hold back tears noting just how little respect Fincham had for my favorite winemaker Bertrand Maume's legacy and skills, and how Pascal Marchand and Fincham were using him as a whipping boy to move heavy items for the tasting.
Red
2012 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
Nose is wheaty with cassis. Palate stern a bit but good.
Red
2012 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice
Nose is a stinky brown?! Palate syrupy a bit? Pass!
Red
2012 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur
Standout! a wow nose, supple tannins, acid, will be awesome, slight barnyard and candy and heat. Should resolve.

Red
2012 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine
Candied cherry; browning, orange! Odd. Mixed bag with Alexandrine's wines today. IN bottle since late August.
White
Red
Red
2012 Domaine Trapet Chambertin
WAAAAH floral, gorgeous, sauvage, Gevrey; chalky, bright, WAAAH, slight green, gets sparse on finish. A monster.
Red
2012 Domaine Bertagna Clos Vougeot
Nose is a deep, sweet plum; palate has that fresh, pure spring water character with elegant silk. WOW. Tannins and acid in tow. Finishes with slight smoke and roses. Very impressive.
Red
2012 Domaine Bertagna Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Nose of dark vinyl, clay, plums, sweet tea and roses. All follows on palate. Very impressive.
Red
2012 René Cacheux et Fils Vosne-Romanée
Palate is stern; plummy/browning. Unrevealing. Will be bottled in mid-April
Red
2012 René Cacheux et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots
Nose is cool dark subtle fruit...plum? Palate unyielding; will be bottled mid April
Red
2012 René Cacheux et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Nose of alluring fruit. Palate tannic with a bite over a glycerin core, pretty residuals of sweet plum and roses. Will be bottled in mid-April. As an ensemble, the Cacheux wines seemed to lack a refinement I'd've hoped for at this level. And given the sexy old school labels that beckoned me to them.
Red
2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée Les Bossières
20% new oak. Nose is a deep jam of dark fruits, vinyl; palate shows sweet plum. Pretty nice! If a bit simple.
Red
2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
20-40% new oak. Yum! Palate shows peppery, smoky roses. Subtle yet insistent tannins. Bottled 10 days ago.
Red
2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot
40-60% new oak. Round subtle tannins, dense wine--dark, and supple. Bottled 10 days ago.
Red
2012 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui
Nose of wheat chex! Palate is a cool spring water and smoky paprika over a cherry jam, very good! 33% new oak.
Red
2003 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui
13.5%. 33% new oak. Nose shows vinyl. Palate is stewed, smoky prune, a bit hot but still alluring! Nevertheless not the best rep for this parcel; stewed. That's 03 for ya.
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée
Bottled 1 month ago (geez! Canneyt finishes early!) 20% whole cluster this year. Nose and palate are tight. Palate has a gentle tannic bite. Very subtle cherry jam. Wispy.
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots
Bottled 1 month ago (geez! Canneyt finishes early!) 20% whole cluster this year. Wow: cool red fruit, elegant, subtle: wow.
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot
Bottled 1 month ago (geez! Canneyt finishes early!) 20% whole cluster this year. Nose shows dense, briary fruit but elegant subtlety.
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant
Bottled 1 month ago (geez! Canneyt finishes early!) 20% whole cluster this year. Nose shows a gentle, skunky forest jam; stems? YESSSS. My kind of Pinot Noir.
Red
2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg
Bottled 1 month ago (geez! Canneyt finishes early!) 20% whole cluster this year. Cool water and skunky jam; subtle and lovely! Wow: roses finish.
Red
2012 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée La Colombiere
100% new oak; no stems. Nose really makes you think whole cluster, but: nope! Nose also showed a scotch tape like aroma. Palate is round with a tea-like character, gentle strawberry jam, round and charming. Smoky jam finish. How the hell does Louis-Michel do it. All oak, no stems, but seems to fool me.
Red
2012 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château
100% new oak; no stems. Nose heavily reduced. Palate is super lightweight and elegant. Skunky roses! Meatier than Colombière.
Red
2012 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots
100% new oak; no stems. Reignots is systematically one of his best (as is Suchots). Nose is uber-beautiful sweet Pinot Noir, rosebush over sous-bois. GAAAH.
Red
2012 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Echezeaux
100% new oak; no stems. Nose is smoky Ceylon--graphite? Palate is smoky roses. Damn.
Red
2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas
50% new oak. Not bottled. Thibault takes his sweet time getting into bottle. Slight redxn, unfinished. Dark cherry jam.
Red
2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot
40% new oak. Not bottled. Thibault takes his sweet time getting into bottle. Nose is gamey, and tight. Palate tight as well.
Red
2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Richebourg
40% new oak. Not bottled. Thibault takes his sweet time getting into bottle. Slight reduction. Palate is super tannic, yet already boasts a lovely plush texture. Skunky in that inebriating Pinot way.
Red
2012 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée
Nose is sweet, rarefied Pinot Noir fruit. Palate is supple and impossible to spit.
Red
2012 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes
Very, very light at this juncture; inscrutable
Red
2012 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot
Nose is a sweet, smoky tea, palate follows with the sweet smoky tea with drying tannins in tow and a great acid. Wow!
Red
2012 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Echezeaux Les Rouges du Bas
Wow. Class in a glass. Tannic, graphite, tea, black cherry jam over spring water. Geez.
Red
2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée
Not yet bottled. Nose is uber-elegant; super sweet Pinot Noir fruit. Palate follows with sweet Pinot fruit and shows a lovely spiciness. Lovely and subtle.

Red
2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux
Not yet bottled. Supreme suppleness (my notes: "souplesse absolue!") atop a fresh and spicy jam. Wow.
Red
2011 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux
Slight green aroma over sweet Pinot fruit, I'd pass on this as I more or less despise 2011, but this is still good!
Red
2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot
Not yet bottled. Nose at this point is gamay-ish, carbonic? Palate has pomegranate and red currant, savage, light and acidic with pronounced tannins.
Red
2011 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot
A slight 2011 green aroma does not detract from the elegance of this wine
Red
2000 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot
Nose has that browning diaper thing going on; palate shows rusty Pinot Noir fruit and a lovely texture. Disclaimer: I typically prefer younger wines...
Red
2012 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot
Nose is bright and clear, red currant, truffle. Palate is heavy but clear and glycerine. Finishes wheaty, drying, sweet cherry Pinot fruit.
Red
2009 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot
Nose has wheat chex; is this somehow reduction?! Palate seems to have disfigured fruit? No. Very perplexing wine given my brief contact
Red
2012 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes
Nose is similar to "standard" Clos de Vougeot; bright and clear, with red currant and truffle; only tactile difference seems to be a denser jam on the palate, this is very nice!
Red
2007 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes
Nose shows rusty Pinot fruit, wheat chex, and flea collar/buckwheat aromas. Palate has nice fruit, smoky horsey plum, tart cherry, with an elegant watery texture.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée Village
Ha; notes read: "Assy brownies and cherry jam, liqueur de cassis. Stem? Not really: complicated maceration story I didn't quite understand. Roses and plum". Already in bottle.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Nose: wow, great spicy jam; palate has a smoky plum jam, VERY alluring--a winner
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes
Not yet bottled. Nose: NSG tire? follows on palate too; over a bright fruit. Cool, marvelous character.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Echezeaux
Not yet bottled. Nose is reductive. Bright fruit behind it. Palate is pétillant a bit; awesome jam, cool fruit. Tea, oodles of acid, and a rose and tea finish.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Clos Vougeot
Dark and savage character; clay; dilute a bit? Inscrutable?
Red
2012 Cecile Tremblay Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes
Skunky à la my beloved Enderle and Moll. Stinky green forest jam, wow. Palate offers cool fruit, very nice! Somewhat simple, monolithic but awesome nonetheless
Red
2012 Cecile Tremblay Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Rouges du Dessus
Nose offers more beloved sweet green forest skunk aromas; palate is sweet and delicious, tannic a tiny bit with good acid. As with last wine, somewhat simple, monolithic but awesome nonetheless.
Red
2012 Cecile Tremblay Echezeaux du Dessus
Nose of cool, skunky fruit and mandarin! First time I've found that aroma. And I love me some alluring uniqueness. Palate is a big-time yum, roses for days. Cecile Tremblay confirms my suspicion that this "skunkiness" character I find in my favorite Pinots is indeed a result of whole cluster.
White
2012 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges Cuvée La Gerbotte
Tiny bit of Pinot Blanc is quite pronounced on nose! Palate has a glycerine feel and honeyed mid. All the same, a bit austere, but very nice.
Red
2012 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Cuvée Les Petits Plets
Nose is very pretty. Palate is light in a sparse way but still offers nice spiciness.
Red
2012 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St. Georges
Very reductive; not yet in bottle
Red
2001 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St. Georges
Browning, meniscus. Some skunkiness. Palate is a browning sous-bois leaf pile, tobacco, yet airy...still surprisingly drying!
Red
2012 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes
Nose is fresh, almost Passetoutgrain-like! jammy good. Very good acid and drying tannins, fresher than expected.
Red
2012 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots
Big wow nose. Beautiful earthy dark cherry fruit. Palate is drying, will be amazing. Mint a bit.
Red
2012 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières
WOW sweet skunky nose masked behind a bit of reduction. Palate shows stemmy spice, YUM, roses, lime/chalk
Red
2002 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains
Blood orange brown hue. Nose is browning a bit too, hammy, palate is smooth and cool, still drying!, finishes on roses and leather. Too brown for my tastes?
Red
2012 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges
Not in bottle. Nose shows reduction, sweet Pinot fruit, sweet green skunkiness. Palate is papery, pomegranate and dark cherry, fine insistent tannins.
Red
2012 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers
Not yet in bottle. Nose is reductive. Palate is a delicious black cherry jam over a spring water core. Tarte aux prunes. FRESH.
Red
2012 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains
Not yet in bottle. Nose shows less reduction than previous. Very cool and laid back; chalky and sweet. Palate is equally laid back--cool spring water, tart cherry and plum.
Red
2012 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges
Not yet in bottle. Nose is reductive. Stems on nose and follow on palate, nearly weightless; like a rusty plum but delicious. Almost like drinking pantyhose. Grand cru worthy indeed.
Red
2004 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges
Nose is browning and so very evocative of marc de bourgogne. Palate was fascinating: cheesy. Really reminded me of Citeaux cheese. Delicious. Finishes cool water and sous-bois.
Red
2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges La Charmotte
Not in bottle. Nose is an assy, chalky musk; the ensemble is charming nonetheless. Palate full of tannins, rough but will be great. Roses and chalk.
Red
2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges
Not yet in bottle. Nose is a skunky reductive one. Palate has wheat chex and is tight--tough as I had sediment in my tasting pour. 5-7 day fermentation, Thibault says. Very impressed with his wines.
Red
2012 Marchand & Tawse / Pascal Marchand Nuits St. Georges
Not yet in bottle. Nose is a pretty paper and pomegranate. Palate is closed; subtle drying tannins. Pretty cherry finish
Red
2012 Marchand & Tawse / Pascal Marchand Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières
Not yet in bottle. 20 months in fût, 2-3 months in cuve. Nose of beautiful dark fruit, musky and pretty. Palate follows with very lovely fruit.

Red
2012 Marchand & Tawse / Pascal Marchand Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains
Not yet in bottle. 20 months in fût, 2-3 months in cuve. Nose is reductive. Palate like a dark fruited crumble pie. Still very tight. These wines are good but lack a certain idiosyncratic character or identity; perhaps like fruity, blonde, giant-breasted clones?
White
2012 Marchand & Tawse / Pascal Marchand Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Terres Blanches Blanc
50% Pinot Blanc. No battonage, but creamy. 50% new oak. Round and friendly. Tangerine glycerine.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges Les Grandes Vignes
Bottled 10 days ago. Nose is slight skunk over cherry; palate offers Ceylon and skunk; YUM. First of three winners today
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes
Bottled 10 days ago. Palate offers an alluring cherry jam over pure water, tasty with subtle acid.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges Les Lavières
Bottled 10 days ago. Less expressive than previous two wines but lovely.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Hauts Pruliers
Bottled 10 days ago. Nose offers blood orange, mulling spice, skunky Pinot character emerges. Palate is laid back and cool but bears tannins. One of many winners chez Daniel Rion today.
Red
2012 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes
Bottled 10 days ago. Another winner. Nose is a cool and charming knockout. Palate is also wow, spring water, plum, fresh pomegranate
Red
2012 Domaine Maume-Marchand-Tawse Mazis-Chambertin
Since the Morey/Tawse buyout, Mark Fincham makes these wines. Bertrand's last vintage was 2011. Biodynamic now. Very cool, soft cherry and tea.
Red
2012 Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques
Since the Morey/Tawse buyout, Mark Fincham makes these wines. Bertrand's last vintage was 2011. Biodynamic now. Nice soft cherry fruit, drying tannic acid on finish.
Red
2012 Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux
Since the Morey/Tawse buyout, Mark Fincham makes these wines. Bertrand's last vintage was 2011. Biodynamic now. Big fruity nose. Tannic, papery finish. Nice, but where's my Maume.
Red
2012 Domaine Maume Gevrey-Chambertin En Pallud
Since the Morey/Tawse buyout, Mark Fincham makes these wines. Bertrand's last vintage was 2011. Biodynamic now. Tannic, fruity, conventional quasi-modern burgundy: where's my Maume? Alluring cherry. Domaine Maume is over as we know it.
Red
2012 Domaine Maume-Marchand-Tawse Gevrey-Chambertin
Since the Morey/Tawse buyout, Mark Fincham makes these wines. Bertrand's last vintage was 2011. Biodynamic now. Much fruitier vs 2011 and Bertrand's work, papery with tannins.
Red
2012 Domaine Bertagna Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers
Nose is a wow, beautiful sweet Pinot fruit and earth, major skunky tire. Palate shows smooth tannins, balance, a bit quiet, tart apple. Very impressive
