Dinner at Bistro Bardot ('98 Pegau Reservee & '01 Wegeler Geisenheimer Rothenberg Eiswein)

Introduction

I invited my mom, sister and girlfriend to this new bistro. This is the newest restaurant addition of wunderkid Guillermo Gonzalez Bersitain, one of Mexico's best chefs. This bistro is intended to serve classic French bistro food in an unpretentious way. Most dishes are full flavored and authentic. This is probably designed to be Monterrey's answer to La Tupiña.

Flight 1 - Starter and main course (1 note)

I started with a fois gras terrine with a mango chutney.

I then ordered a richly flavored Cassoulet of duck, pork and lamb. It was hearty, intensely flavorful and served in a body of baked white beans.

From Magnum. This is the best showing of this wine for me. Medium ruby color and an attractive nose of spice box and red fruits. Medium to full bodied, with completely resolved tannin and a very pleasant finish. I like Chateauneuf du Papes but I am rarely wowed by them. This is one of the best I've had, but the nose fell short on the complexity side when compared with an incredible 1998 Bonneau Reserve de Celestines that remains shoulders above any other CNP I have ever tasted including this one.

Flight 2 - Desserts (1 note)

We ordered to desserts to share. Both were to die for.

1. French toast with peanut butter

2. A long pastry filled with hazelnut nutella and chocolate

Very pale straw color. Much lighter than the 2000 Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal that we drank last night. This is an elegant eiswein. The nose is somewhat restrained and gives apple and peach. Medium to full body with a great texture and nice acidity, this is not as great as last night's Z-H bomb.

What great, rich and simple food can be had here. I'll be coming back to this one.
