Flight 1 - I. Warm ups (5 notes)

White
2008 Ceretto Langhe Arneis Blangé Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Deep golden yellow color. Initial aroma is of apple juice, followed by wet stone. The palate, though rich in texture, mirrors the bouquet with its apple juice notes. Perhaps too old? Revisiting this before it was unveiled, the apple juice qualities had softened, leaving pear and stone notes. Had no real guess here- you could have told me OTH Chardonnay or a Rhone varietal or just about anything else and I'd not have argued with you.
White
2012 Domaine Bourillon Dorléans Vouvray Vieilles Vignes La Coulee d'Argent France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
85 points
Deep color- looks older like the first wine. Aromas of white fruit and florals, with a wet stone quality as well. Here again, apple juice on the palate, though there's a spicy flavor that lingers through the finish; plenty of acid too. Guessed Italian variety.
White
2002 Rubicon Estate Blancaneaux USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
88 points
Lemongrass and citrus notes; has a sweet quality too, almost like Lemonheads candy, along with mineral and stone. Toasty, charred quality on the palate, followed by apple and orchard fruit with a butterscotch note on the finish. Guessed Bordeaux blend.
White
2013 Loveblock Vintners Ltd Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough, Awatere Valley
88 points
Pale color with notes of jalapeno and cat urine along with sour lime. Tangy acidity on the palate with lime and jalapeno flavors. Obviously Sauv Blanc, and I incorrectly guessed S. Africa.
White
2012 Skouras Moscofilero Greece, Peloponnisos
87 points
Pale color with aromas of white peach, florals and sweet citrus notes. White fruit on the palate, again with a subtle "sweet" quality that is rather pleasant, and a soft spice note on the finish. Guessed domestic Viognier.

Flight 2 - II. Reds (6 notes)

Red
1997 Guenoc Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Beckstoffer IV USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Fairly deep color with aromas of black cherry, herbs, tea leaves and dried leaves/forest floor. Tannins are still somewhat firm but sweet and there's a plushness on the palate. Flavors of black raspberry, blackberry, evergreen and dried herbs. Guessed CA Cab Bordeaux blend. 90-91 pts.
Red
2006 Shafer Relentless USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Garnet color. Aromas of chalk, chocolate and black currants. Full-bodied and dense, with chalky tannins and flavors of chocolate and black fruit with a spice-tinged finish. Guessed Napa cab sauv. 89+ pts.
Red
1986 Château Sociando-Mallet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
86 points
Soft garnet color. Red berry fruit with Wyler's bouillon cube undertones. The palate follows the bouquet; tired red fruit on the finish. The bouillon qualities soften and almost disappear, leaving some ripe, but tired, dark fruit. Guessed old Zin.
Red
2005 Kaesler Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Raspberry and pomegranate- very forward fruit. Full-bodied with chalky tannins and a mix of red & black fruit. Ripe, maybe even a raisin quality. Finishes well, with a mix of fruit and oak spice. Guessed Zin.
Red
1995 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
Softened garnet color. Aromas of tobacco, iron, red currants and maybe even some iodine. Balanced, with softened tannins and flavors of iron, tobacco, red fruit and forest floor. Long finish. 92-93 pts. Guessed lesser 2000/2001 St. Julien.
Red
2011 Alexandria Nicole Quarry Butte Destiny Ridge Vineyards USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills

Aromas of vanilla and sour red fruit. Medium-bodied with flavors of vanilla, red fruit and spice, but turning sour on the mid-palate and finish. Guessed Tempranillo.

Flight 3 - III. Reds (5 notes)

Red
2004 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Vandal Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Garnet color. Herbal overtones with red and black currants and cassis with just a hint of beef bouillon cube. Medium tannin with some lovely red fruit, but it turns sour and acidic on the finish. Guessed Cab Sauv.
Red
2010 Priest Ranch Petite Sirah Somerston USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Inky color. Aromas of meat, violets, kirsch and chocolate. Full-bodied, with firm tannins, but they're definitely approachable and dare I say ready. Cassis, blackberry and chocolate on the palate. Balanced, with a nice long finish. Petite, and I thought ours. Worth seeking out.

A mix of red and dark fruit in the bouquet, along with an anise/tarragon quality and dill. Red fruit and spice on the palate, with dark fruit on the finish. Develops a strawberry note as it opens further in the glass. Guessed Napa cab.
