Introduction

Wines purchased from La Cabaña de Saura, El Algar, Murcia. Raul always directs me towards some gems I haven't come across before.

Flight 1 - Whites (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
2010 Juvé y Camps Cava Milesimé Brut Reserva Spain, Cava
A proper cava rather than poor man's champagne, with large bubbles that soon disappeared to leave just a bit of sherbety spritz. Mild tasting, dough-like, with an undertow of liquorice. Enjoyable. It grew on me.
White
2012 Bodegas Merencio Treixadura Ribeiro Spain, Galicia, Ribeiro
Odd but refreshing wine. Sour apples, quite a bit of oaky vanilla, some furry tannins. Better on Day 2, but still not sure what to make of this.
White
2012 Produccions a Modino Ribeiro San Clodio Spain, Galicia, Ribeiro
90 points
Fresh pears and white peaches on nose and palate. A bit of liquorice and yeastiness. Flavoursome with good intensity on the finish. Clean, refreshing but with backbone. Nice wine and VGV.
White
2013 Via Nova Godello Valdeorras Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras
90 points
Forward and attractive, clean and fresh, with pears to the fore and a nice underpinning of yeast and liquorice. VGV. 13%.
White
2012 Bodega Abel Mendoza Rioja Malvasia Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
91 points
Poached pear, white peaches and stewed pears on the complex, attractive nose, underpinned by cinnamon and clove and all spice. Nice weight on the palate. Balanced. More-ish.
White
2011 Bodegas Avancia Godello Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras
86 points
Honeyed lemon on the nose. A bit too much lemony acidity on the palate for my taste. The oak is pretty well integrated, but I didn't find this the most giving of wines. Didn't really call one back for another glass. 13.5%. [replacement bottle for one that was corked, exchanged without fuss by the shop.]
White
2013 Bodega José Pariente Verdejo Rueda Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
82 points
A decent wine, clean and fresh, but somewhat nondescript, which is not atypical for entry level Rueda in my experience. 13%.

Flight 2 - Reds (15 notes)

Red
2011 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Camins del Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
90 points
Chewy wine, with a bold black treacle, cocoa, violet and black berry fruit nose, hinting at dandelion and burdock. Attractive.

Showed very well on Day 2. More open quite meaty.
Red
2012 Bodegas Ateca Calatayud Atteca Old Vines Spain, Aragón, Calatayud
88 points
A bit reminiscent of a new wave Rioja. There's a whiff of violets and mixed berry fruit, but the nose is a little dumb. On the palate, very sweet, quite heavy on its feet, some lean acidity not wholly integrated. But a very pleasant barbecue wine.

2010 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
90 points
A bit bretty at first, but that blew off to reveal a sleek, elegant, classy Rioja in the modern style. Silky black stone fruit, a dash of violets. Unforced. 13.5%. VGV.

2009 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Crianza Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
91 points
Violets and dark stone fruit suggests Tempranillo in one of its guises. Undertone of tinned tomatoes leads us to Ribeiro del Duero. Palm butter and coconut are hallmarks to me of Condado de Haza. Some signs of age on the visuals. Nice wine and VVG QPR.
Red
2009 Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial Sardon de Duero Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León
92 points
Immediately attractive, forward but classy wine. Plums and mulberries on the nose, sweet but with only a hint of jamminess, a bit of spice, vanilla, and an underpinning of black treacle. Some sweetness on the palate, but structured and with well integrated acidity. Nice wine and drinking very well now. 14%.

2012 Teso La Monja Toro Almirez Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
91 points
Thick, dark, classy wine from Tinta (sic) de Toro grown in 3 separate sites, with powerful black treacle aromatics, liquorice powder, dandelion and burdock, and Priorat-like minerality. Not at all jammy, as you might expect from such a big wine. And 'only' 14.5% ABV. GV.
Red
2009 Casa Gran del Siurana Priorat Cruor Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
Ripe cassis notes on the nose of this very more-ish blend of Garnatxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Caranyena, with the ripe bramble influence of the Grenache rounding things out. Wears its 15.5% ABV very lightly. GV.
Red
2009 Finca de la Rica Rioja El Nómada de la Rica Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
82 points
Jammy bramble fruit on the rather one-dimensional nose. Pretty dried out on the palate. I felt this was rather forced, perhaps over-extracted. 14% ABV.
Red
2009 Bodegas Reyes Ribera del Duero Teofilo Reyes Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
85 points
A straight down the line Ribeiro del Duero. Violets, brambly fruit and tinned tomatoes on the nose. A bit disjointed on the palate, with some unintegrated acidity. A bit dried out. One dimensional, but pleasant enough. 13.5%.
Red
2011 Psi Ribera del Duero Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
87 points
Attractive nose of violets, brambles and a touch of cassis, but rather cardboardy on the palate, dried out, lacking vitality. Nice enough, but disappointing for the price. 14%.
Red
2010 Crapula Jumilla Cr Gold 5 Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
87 points
Perhaps not destined for the export market, this 100% Monastrell delivers plenty of ripe, jammy fruit but has yet to rid itself of a certain youthful disjointedness. 14%.

2010 Mas Martinet Priorat Martinet Bru Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
A blend of Garnatxa and Syrah, this is a very big wine indeed, with lots of ripe jammy fruit that, at least to begin with, somewhat masked its origin. But some trademark Priorat minerality emerged with time. A bold but classy wine, and very more-ish. 15%.
Red
2011 Bodegas Atalaya La Atalaya Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa
I think this had some TCA but it was such a big, big, massively proportioned, powerfully flavored wine that it was hard to be sure whether I was tasting cork taint or just some rather unattractive twigginess. There was certainly still a lot of ripe berry fruit, eucalyptus and vanilla. At 16%, not a shy wine. I would like to try another bottle before passing judgment.
Red
2005 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
91 points
A blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% a mix of Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, this straddled traditional and modern stylistically. The silky mouthfeel and glossy sheen to the fruit nodded towards the modern, but the leathery, animal nose - married with violets and plums- was defiantly old school. Relatively high acidity. Vary classy wine with a long future ahead. 13.5%.

2008 Casa Castillo Jumilla Piè Franco Spain, Murcia, Jumilla

Dry, dense, austere, almost forbidding wine - but very impressive for its sinewy build. Lavender, thyme and violets add complexity to the monolithic dark fruit.
