Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
2012 Chateau Montelena Riesling USA, California, North Coast, Potter Valley
84 points
tropical fruit, restrained nose, very correctly made, just not enough acidity and a little short.
White
2012 Chateau Montelena Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley
86 points
decent, quite fresh, sauvignon blanc that has more lime and lemongrass than gooseberry and grass. A little peach also. decent but not so interesting.
White
2011 Chateau Montelena 40th Chardonnay Vintage USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Soft attack, clearly an oaked chardonnay, but it has good ripe fruit and decent freshness (though it is lower than previous vintages) and it probably does not see too much new oak, as some of the other napa chards (not that that says all that much) and its well made and charming, decent length, fine.
Red
2006 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
84 points
Blackberries and white chocolate, black currants, soft wood spice, extracted, quite tough tannins, good acidity, this is not bad but also not that balanced.
Red
2010 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
90 points
This is more interesting, has that sweet fruit and complexity on the nose, sure enough a lot of oak, but good fruit and also some mint&eucalyptus which makes this interesting, good freshness but the extraction at this estate is too much, resulting in rather dry tannic finish.
