Introduction

Last night we had an absolutely amazing event...
I wil not post the notes in drinking order.
I start with my highlights of this tasting and then some shorter notes (even scores alone)

Flight 1 - The top Bordeau wines (3 notes)

For me this was my first real introduction in the top of Bordeaux.

Red
1989 Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
100 points
What a wine.... What a nose... What a taste...
I smelled, I sniffed, and after more than a minute I realized I was in trance... black ripe fruit some currants a hint of chocolate and plum... you just keep on sniffing.. And then the taste. WOW!! It covers your mouth and every layer of this juice attacks your palate with enormous concentration. everything is in its place.
Again that beautiful ripe black fruit, some plum, currants, a touch of caramel? well.. its just fabulous!!
One of the (if not the) best reds I have ever had.
Hors Categorie!!
Amazing!!!
Rating this wine is bullsh*t, but hey... let's give it the perfect score.
Red
1989 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
98 points
An amazing wine.
A great nose. not too much red pepper that I smelled in a lot of other Boredaux (I tend to dislike it when it is pronounced).
A litlle barnyard back up the fruit. The taste surpassesthe mouth by far. ultrafine flavours and a multilayered wine. Beautiful black fruit, mediterranian herbs, lavas, and pepper.
All in beautiful balance nice tannic structure and acidity to pack it all in a firm frame.
very very fine!! great finish.
Red
1993 Château Le Pin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
95 points
A very fine nose that is not very expressive though.
On the palate it delivers a great diversity: beautiful fruit, espresso, herbs, tobacco. The fruit is quite jammy and the wine caresses the mouth. beautiful use of wood!!Superb finish.
I think this wine has room to grow a little. The tannic structure is at this stage a bit too much for the fruit.

great stuff.

Flight 2 - The top Italian ones (2 notes)

Back home to my favorite wine country... Even after all those beautifulll bordeaux

Red
1997 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
97 points
By far the best Italian red of the evening. At this stage of the tasting (wine #40) my notes have become quite short...

This is a fat wine that is almost literally on fire!! It combines that beautiful Sangiovese fruit with great power and finesse. Those fine riep red cherries are accompanied by some mediterranian herbs, licorice, tobacco and a hint of pepper and truffel. In my opninion this wine will at least last for 7 years at this level and there is a slight chance it might improve to my taste for older Sangiovese. Not that the wine will become better, but I think that I will like it even moren in a year or three.

absolutley great stuff!!
White - Sweet/Dessert
1987 Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vin Santo di Montepulciano
98 points
Man, am I a fan of this Vin Santo....
It is just always a treat!!
What struck me again is that beautiful balance between the sweetness and acidity. That balance is mastered best by Avignonesi and that makes it the best of all Vin Santo's.
There are three component this wine is build on and all three of them are super, super concentrated:
The Sweetness
The Acidity
The Fruit

Thsi wine will absolutely never die. Apple syrup, honey, pure caramel, liquid creme brulee, burnt nuts. almond. Man, you can taste so much in this... a dream!

This wine is well made, but just not to my taste... There is just too much red pepper on the nose and some dairy tones that I dislike a lot.
That comes back in the mouth, although I must say that there are of course plenty of enjoyable flavours as well.
I must add that a great part of the group liked it a lot.

Red
2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
great stuff.. drank this one in our little diner break. no notes taken.
It is a youngster!! room to grow.
Combines masses of fruit with a beautiful structure that is a bit too tannic at this stage.

Flight 4 - The rest of the Italians and some Spanish wines (9 notes)

The Spanish wines were at the at of the tasting and at that time my palate was so tired that I am ashamed to say that the wine did not get the attention they deserve... Indication of that: Vega Sicilia Unic0 1994 and Pingus 2001 escaped from my attention abit. On the other hand... wouldn't you expect a truly great wine to come through?? Some other Spanish did....

Very very difficult to taste right after the vin santo.
after a few reds I rtatsed it and it was better already. I do think it is past its prime though. a bit disappointing.
