Introduction

Keith hosted this month and put together a really fun dinner featuring 2001 Barolo. He chose a wise partner for this dinner - Osteria Langhe. We had a great spread, a custom 4-course meal that was great, and wonderful, attentive service.

Flight 1 - Opening Champagne (1 note)

Served with champagne battered, speck wrapped, king crab leg with passion fruit aioli.

Aromas of pear, flint, apple, and florals gave this a very pretty nose. The palate was bright and fresh with some leesy notes. Tons of acidity and energy on the palate made this a very good Champagne.

Flight 2 - Barolo Blends & Barolo Cru (4 notes)

Served with french quail, mushroom, thyme & goat cheese stuffing with quail jus.

Dark aromas of florals, earth, and blackberries on the nose and a touch of sweetness. Pretty interesting how open this wine was - that definitely caught me off-guard. The fruit was juicy and dark, it had nice sweet tannins, and an earthy/floral note on the midpalate. Drinking nicely already, but it has a lot of life for the long haul too.

This was one of the slicker wines of the night with a very modern approach. The fruit seemed a bit darker and denser than some of the others, and the oak was noticeable too. The flavor profile on the palate was good - dark fruits, floral notes, some smoke...but it was all a bit too dense for my tastes. A good wine, but stylistically a bit outside of my comfort zone.

This was my favorite wine of flight one by a comfortable margin. The aromatics on the nose were feminine, airy, and very floral. The palate was in a good spot too. Still had a dark fruit profile for sure, but I think the floral aspects were dialed up a bit here. Nice acidity and structure too. Drinking well on this night, with a lot of life ahead of it too.

Flight 3 - La Morra & Castiglione Falletto (4 notes)

Served with prime new york napolean, puff pastry, sunny egg, foie gras truffle glace. This was an epic dish.

An outstanding bottle of Nebbiolo, and proof that even the more "modern" Barolo producers can apply to those of us who are firmly traditionalists. No doubt about the big and juicy fruit profile on the nose but what appealed to me is the balance that the floral and smokey notes gave it. The palate was very nicely balanced and this was one of the least tannic wines of the night which appealed to me.

A bit hard to get a read on as the fruit and aromas were a bit muted to me. I let this one sit a bit in the glass while I drank some other stuff, and luckily the wine perked up a bit. Had some nice dark floral notes, some red fruit, and smokey earth. I'm guessing this will improve with time.

Kinda what I was hoping for. Truly elegant (albeit young) at this point with a beautiful nose of rich fruit, layers of violets, smokey minerals, and some tar. The nose was dark and seductive, while the palate was floral, and more elegant. There were still a healthy dose of tannins in there so you had to close your eyes and think about what this will be like in 20 years once the tannins begin to fully resolve themselves, and boy, the future is bright here.

Super dark and dense - lots of black fruits, some licorice, roses, and tar. The palate was rigid with a lot of nice underlying fruit and florals. I liked what I could discern from this...another one that'll be better with time.

Flight 4 - Serralunga & Monforte (4 notes)

Served with castelmagno, salami dolce, candied hazelnuts, and honey.

One of my favorites of the night. While it still had a shrill wall of tannins, as the evening progressed, some very fine rose notes emerged. Just a lovely bouquet of roses, dried leaves, earth, and cranberries. Lots of promise.

This has P-R-O-M-I-S-E written all over it. The youth of this wine was painfully evident with the barrage of tannis you get on the palate. The nose was really great though. Truly hypnotic. Multiple layers of earthy red fruits, smokey tobacco, and roses. What I'm hoping is that as the tannins recede, the underlying fruit mirror the gorgeous aromas it had. Hold, hold, hold.

One of the most masculine wines of the night. The aromas were big and bold - think; beef broth, sage, tar, red fruit, black fruit, and earth. The palate was highly structured and while it impresses you with its power, and complexity I found it slightly hard to get a great read on. Good material? Yes. Lots of tannins? Yes Do I think it'll get better with age? Yes.

One of the more expressive wines of the night. Lots of rose notes, and a combination of dark fruits with cranberries, cherries, and pomegranate. Still had some drying tannins on the finish, but I really liked this.

After dinner we had a cocktail that featured Cappellano Chinato - loved the cocktail.
