Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2008 Benanti Etna Bianco Superiore Pietramarina Italy, Sicily, Etna Bianco Superiore
91 points
Medium straw colour. Minerality-dominated nose with flintstone and sandstone alongside beeswax, citrus fruit, green apple. Medium-bodied, vibrant, combining elements indicating some evolution with freshness and crisp. High acidity and long aftertaste. Could age much further. Reminded me of a top Santorini assyrtiko, but this seems to evolve at a slower pace.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Benanti Nerello Cappuccio Sicilia Il Monovitigno Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
88 points
Medium to dark ruby. Cherry candy, cinnamon and herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied with very soft tannins and high acidity. Medium aftertaste.
Red
2009 Benanti Nerello Mascalese Sicilia Il Monovitigno Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
90 points
Light ruby-garnet. Violets, red cherry, raspberries and aromatic herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied with bright fruit, herbaciousness, medium to high acidity, soft tannins and a long aftertaste.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2013 I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Etna Vinupetra Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
92 points
This is the not for sale edition of this label, since it is produced with a traditional method which has been banned by the Italian authorities for hygiene reasons. Dark ruby colour. Expressive nose with intense sour cherry jam, violets, sweet spices and ginger. Medium+ bodied with high fruit concentration, soft tannins and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. An impressive wine.
Red
2012 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
93 points
This is still young with somewhat intrusive tannins at this stage, but shows great potential and character. Medium to dark ruby colour. Floral nose with violets and roses alongside red cherries, strawberries, raspberries and herbal scents. Medium-bodied with firm tannins that need further cellaring and high acidity. Long aftertaste. Amazing freshness and purity but needs time.
